The College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications and nominations from qualified individuals for the position of Chair of the School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE). CSE has made significant progress since its inception as a division in 2005 (and a school in 2010) toward creating a strong foundation to sustain its future and to support the broader mission of the college. The new chair will be expected to further build upon the many accomplishments, professional relationships, and interdisciplinary strides that already exist in the school by providing effective leadership and strategic vision.

The College of Computing was established in 1990 under the direction of the founding dean, Peter Freeman. The college is a world-class leader in research and computing breakthroughs. The graduate program is currently ranked 10th nationally by U.S. News and World Report. It consists of three schools that provide specialized and general computing education to the entire campus. The college is part of the Georgia Institute of Technology, which is a unit of the University System of the State of Georgia and is primarily located in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, which is a large, vibrant, verdant city having great economic and cultural strengths.

The School of CSE is primarily housed in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building and participates in, and offers, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Disciplines associated with the school include high performance computing, data analytics and machine learning, visualization, modeling and simulation, and numerical and discrete algorithms. CSE research is inherently interdisciplinary, involving disciplines from several other schools and colleges at Georgia Tech, and focuses on making fundamental advances in the creation and application of new computational methods and techniques in order to enable breakthroughs in scientific discovery and engineering practice. The school has 11 academic faculty (plus 3 joint appointments), 10 other faculty (including researchers and postdoctoral fellows), 5 fulltime staff, and a host of adjunct faculty. There are approximately 150 graduate students enrolled in CSE. The School also participates in several interdisciplinary efforts including FODAVA, the Institute of Data and High Performance Computing, the Keeneland project, the Center for Hybrid Multicore Productivity Research, the Center for Adaptive Supercomputing Software-Multithreaded Architectures, the Center for Relativistic Astrophysics, the Center for High Performance Computing, and the Center for Data Analytics.

The new chair should have a very strong commitment to education, a distinguished record of research, the ability to work well with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students, as well as other campus administrators and leaders, a proven record of achieving external visibility and funding, administrative oversight, and solid decision making skills. This position will report to the Imlay Dean of Computing and is responsible for all administrative, budgetary and personnel decisions within the school. The chair will also provide leadership in setting the vision, strategic direction, and goals of the school. Due to the primarily interdisciplinary nature of CSE, the incumbent will be expected to cultivate and embrace the other units as CSE continues to develop.

The ideal candidate will: have a terminal degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; be a full professor with tenure in a premier department at a pre-eminent research university or a renowned researcher working outside of academia; have strong organizational and team building skills; be a seasoned manager with the ability to bring together faculty with diverse interests; be someone who shares the Institute’s goals for the personal and educational enrichment of its faculty, staff, and students; have experience with strategic planning, fiscal management, and vision development; and will embrace participative management, conceptual thinking, and open decision making.
