The textbook for this class is Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications by Kenneth H. Rosen (4th edition). All sections meet together for class lectures on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Fridays each section meets separately with their TA for discussion of the lectures and homework problems.

Grading
Quiz 1 20%
Quiz 2 20%
Quiz 3 20%
Final Exam 40%
No makeup quizzes will be given. If you miss a quiz for a legitimate
reason then your final exam grade will take the place of that quiz grade
for your final average. Most of your work will be graded by the teaching
assistant assigned to your recitation section based on grading keys that
the instructor provides. If you are unhappy with the grading of a
particular problem on an assignment you may turn it in for regrading by
the instructor. (TAs may not change a grade once the paper is returned.)
You should turn in the entire assignment that contains the problem(s) you
would like for the instructor to regrade with an attached note clearly
specifying which problems are to be regraded. The instructor will
regrade the entire problem. His grade is final and could be either higher
or lower than your original grade.
Homework
To do well on the quizzes you must do
the homework. My minimum expectation (read "C") when making out the
quizzes is that you have done and understood every homework problem that
you have been assigned. The homework assignments will not be taken
up and graded but you will have an opportunity every Friday to ask questions
about the class examples and the homework problems during your recitation
section. You should have at least have attempted to do each homework
problem before it is discussed on Friday. Watching the TA do the homework
on the board is not enough! First you should learn how to do each
problem, then you should practice doing similar problems from the textbook
(which has MANY problems at the end of each section). My past
experience is that students who do not keep up with the homework get hammered
on the quizzes. If you have a personal policy of not doing homework, do
yourself a favor and drop this course now. Also consider transferring to
UGa.
Instructor Information
My office is located on the third floor of the Centennial Research
Building (CRB 373), approximately a ten minute walk from the College of
Computing Building. My email is hodges@cc.gatech.edu. Email
is the best way to contact me. I will have some office hours in a
"borrowed" office in the College of Computing Building( CCB). Place and
time will be announced in class.
