Studio Design Project

Coordinating Instructor:

Beginning on Wednesday, January 12, there will be no regular class meetings. Scheduled class hours are to be used for group meetings and two presentations later in the term.

Course Description and Information

From the catalog: CS 3351 Studio Design Project. A project-oriented laboratory course used to familiarize
students with software engineering methods in a realistic environment.

Course objectives: Students will develop and demonstrate their abilities to work in a team on a substantial software project. There are three conceptual parts to the project efforts expected of each team:

Define the problem
Design and implement a solution
Deliver the system to the customer

Course organization:

Projects will be done by teams of four or five students. You may choose your own teammates.
Each team will have a faculty advisor and (usually) a separate customer. The job of the customer is to negotiate the project requirements with the team and to provide ongoing input about proposed solutions. The faculty advisor will meet with the team on a regular basis to monitor progress, make sure the team is following a coherent process, and assist with team organizational problems.
Each team will present a midterm report and a final demo and report to their advisor, their customer, and the advisor and members of another group.

Center for Rehabilitation Technology:

The Screen Analysis Utility is to help blind users gather information about application screen layout and provide that information to their screen reading software. This would initially be a utility that rehab. engineers could use to adapt the screen readers to handle software packages or systems. If the vendors of screen reading software supported it, the readers could act much more intelligently than they do currently.

Manufacturing database project:

The project we are looking for is for a database to calculate the cost per hour to run a single or group of machines, the direct and overhead labor rates as we provide the fixed and variable costs. We are looking for a database that can record changes and project a profit and loss statement for a given period. We currently have been calculating these costs using MS Excel that link to many other sheets. I have included an example of what one file looks like and what type of information we are producing. I hope I have been descriptive enough and at the same time been brief enough to allow you to decide if you would like to peruse this project further.

I also have an Excel file that gives an example of the calculations they want done.

Network protocol simulation

Possible project: develop a simple simulation of the Medium Access Protocol for a Hybrid-Fiber-Coax system. We have complex simulations. The purpose of the simulation would be to develop it as a sequence of exercises for a project for CS4251.
