 2/07/2000, 2:00 p.m. Subject: CS 4400 Message#2

Hi:

I want to repeat a few announcements I made in class last week.

CLASS SCHEDULE:

Due to my other teaching obligation in the school of continuing education and an invited talk at another school, I will be asking Prof. Mark
and the TA's to do the following classes. I thank Prof. Mark for doing this for our class.

Feb 10: Prof. Mark: - will talk on SQL. Refer to Ch 8 in book and to his notes on his section's web page.

Feb 17: The TA's will cover details of using ORACLE for the project.

Feb 24: Prof. Mark: - will talk on his design methodology that explicitly involves using input/output definitions and process descriptions.  We
are NOT requiring you to use it. Those who want to, may produce additional documentation and attach to Pahse 2 delivarables.  Refer to his
notes on methodology on his section's web page.  Also, look through chapter 16 (this chapter will be included for the next exam.)

PHASE I:

The report is due Feb.10 in class. Ayo Alaran will collect it at the end of the class.

Please indicate clearly the majors of the members of the team and whether you need a CS person to be added to your team.  No group will
be allowed to exceed 4 members.

UNLESS THERE IS A SPECIFIC REQUEST, WE WILL NOT CHANGE THE GROUPS AROUND IN ANY WAY.

EXAM 1:

Will be in class (closed book) on Feb 15th. Will be a combination of short questions, diagramming, writing queries etc..
Chapters 1,2 - definitions, explanation of terms
Chapter 3, 4: drawing ER and EER diagrams and reading or modifying them.
Ch 7 - general modeling questions, queries in algebra.
Ch 8 - simple SQL queries (based on Feb 10 class).

You are encouraged to do the review questions and other exercises at the end of these chapters.

1/26/2000, 2:00 p.m.  Subject: CS 4400 Message#1

Hi:

Henceforth I will number my messages and will also ask Cathy to keep them in a file which can be linked to our web homepage.  She will be updating the announcements on our section's homepage as we make them. Announcements will also be posted to the newsgroup for this class.

1. Note that we have made adjustments to the poilcy for groups as follows.  The policy for graduating seniors is also spelled out.

Policy for Groups:

A. For phase 1 we will *not* be particular about the groups. Groups will have 3 or 4 members. If you plan on requesting a CS member to add, keep your group at 2 or 3 for phase 1.

B. Groups with all CS/CMPE  students are definitely discouraged considering that the class has 31 out of 98 such students.

C. The general guidelines will be not to have groups with all ISYE's or all  CS students. A mix is encouraged. However, if there is a mix of skills in the group in terms of application knowledge/programming experience/ writing ability and the group feels comfortable with it, we can let you keep a
group with 3 or 4 ISYE students.

D. For subsequent phases, groups may request (send requests to ayo@resnet) an additional member.

E. Those looking for group partners should contact Ayo as well.

===================

Policy for Graduating Seniors:

Grades for graduating seniors are due on Thursday during last week of classes (i.e., on April 27th). They must show their demos by April 25th.  We have 36 graduating seniors out of 98 - so chances are that every group will have one. A grade will be assigned based on the work done upto April 27th. An opportunity to improve the grade is available by taking the final (grade can only be upgraded; will not be downgraded).

====================

2). I would like you to download certain chapters' figures which are kept by the publisher at a website in pdf format. For now, download chapters
3 and 4. I encourage you to bring these to class so you can write notes on them in class. I will cover Chapter 4 mostly by talking about the figures.

The figures are at:

ftp://ftp.awl.com/cseng/authors/elmasri/Dbase3e/figures/

3) I noticed that the email alias for the class provided to me by the registration system had all the students in the roster after Sassaman missing. Now this message should reach everybody.

4) Please start using the T.A.'s help during their office hours. Do not wait till the last date.

1/22/2000, 3:30 p.m.  New project group guidelines have been posted. Each group should have at least 1 CS/CompE student, but no more than 2 ISyE students.  Groups composed solely of ISyE or of CS/CompE are NOT allowed.  We're doing this to spread out the talent among all groups -- this is a significant project in terms of programming and you will regret not having at least one person in your group who can program and help other members of the group with programming problems.

1/20/2000, 4:30 p.m.  The project page is up!  You should be choosing who you want to work with for the project.  Groups of 3-4 people are required; try to get at least one group member with good programming skills.  The newsgroup is a good way to post and find a group -- git.cc.class.cs4400aThe first Phase will be due Feb. 10 - that's in 2 weeks!
