This lab was writen assuming you live on campus or are accessing newsgroups from one of the public clusters on campus. If you are attempting this from off campus, you will not be able to get past a firewall that is placed around the entire campus that prevents off campus access. There is a way around this using a secure-telnet program. Contact OIT for information and assistance on how to do this.
The goal of this assignment is to be able to read newsgroups related to this course. To do this, setup instructions have been provided into three parts. The first part is for people using MS Outlook Express or MS Outlook. The second part is for those people wishing to use Netscape. The third section is a description of how to read newsgroup if MS Outlook, Outlook Express, and Netscape fail. Take this time now to read the steps to setup the newgroup reader you wish to use. Once setup is complete, finish reading the rest of this assignment.
Note that a seperate widow will open when the above links are clicked
Once you have gotten your newsgroup reader to work, you need to subscribe to the following newsgroups:
git.cc.class.cs1311.announce THIS IS REQUIRED READING EVERYDAY
git.cc.class.cs1311.recAnother newsgroup that you may want to subscribe to is cs131x.misc which is to be used for off topic postings.
Once you have managed to subscribe to the .announce and .rec newsgroups, you should be able to find messages inside that will confirm that you have managed to read the newsgroup.
Now that you know how to read newsgroups, remember that newsgroups are like really big message boards that anyone can post to. This means that you should not say anything on a message board that you wouldn't say to someone else in public. Also, newsgroups can be a huge resource for help, but only if you take the time to read previous messages to keep the flow of traffic down. It is highly suggested that you read all the postings on a particular topic before you post any new questions to the newsgroup.
Happy posting
