Emacs 1.17 Install
Here is the screen shot of a download folder containing the .sit archive of Emacs. Like before we need to expand this file by either dragging it on top of the Aladdin Expander on the desktop or by double clicking it. Select all the files in the archive. This time we need to make a folder titled "Emacs" to hold all the related Emacs files. In the example to the left, we created the Emacs folder within the download folder. You can do this as well, or unstuff the archive into a folder on your harddrive, or for that matter, you can unstuff it into a folder on your desktop and drag it to where ever you want it. Once you have the folder where you want double click on it.

There are two folders you need to be concerned with:

  • "Put in Power Mac System Folder"
  • "Put in System Folder"
  • With MacOS 8.x all you need to do is select the files in these folders and drag them on top of your System Folder. You will be prompted with a Window stating that the files needed to be placed in the Extensions Folder. Click "OK" and the MacOS will happily place them in the Extensions folder for you.

BEFORE you do this read the "Known Problems" below. I cannot stress this enough!

    Known Problems:

The ObjectSupportLib extension can cause a few problems depending on what software and extensions are installed. If you are running MacOS 8.6, there is a newer version built into the system. In this case, DO NOT drag and drop it. With any MacOS prior to 8.6, check your "Extensions" folder (located within your System Folder) to see if you already have this extension. Again, if you have it DO NOT drag and drop it. If you don't have it, you may or may not need it. This is the best way to find out:

    • Restart your computer WITHOUT moving the "ObjectSupportLib"
    • Launch "Emacs" (it's the file labeled "Emacs")
    • It launches the "Emacs Positioner" and says it is doing a one time configuration.
    • The window has a bunch of lines that scroll by faster than you can read them all.
    • The "Emacs Positioner" quits.
    • Double click "Emacs" again and you should get a window like this.

If this isn't what happens for you, chances are one of two things is happening:

    • It is launching the "Emacs Positioner" everytime you launch Emacs, but it isn't finishing it's process correctly.
    • The "Emacs Positioner" is "locking up" and you are having to quit, thus resulting in the above reason.

If this is the case, you need the "ObjectSupportLib" extension. So drag and drop it on top of your System Folder, restart, and launch "Emacs" again. There is one last problem that may result after it has been installed. Bascily some applications, upon quiting, will cause System Errors or cause the "Finder" to unexpectably quit. If this happens, it would be wisest to either upgrade to MacOS 8.6 (you won't need the extension then) or download the other version of Emacs at the top (and follow the installation instructions for it).
