If you haven't already downloaded Emacs, you'll need to get a copy from one of the following sites:

    1312 Release:

We are currently working on a release specific for this class.

    Emacs 20.4:

      HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This release is the latest available, but there are a few issues (discussed later) with hard coded paths that make running it a little "harder." It WILL run, it just requires a couple extra steps to launch. It has MANY more features than the 1.17 release. Just make sure to get the binary release that does not require you build the program.

    Emacs 1.17 (Cornell ftp):

This is an older version. If you don't run into any problems on instalation, it is an extremely stable and reliable distribution. It's look and feel and very similar to the Windows release of Emacs. You only need the Emacs-1.17.sit file, so don't worry about the others.

Alrighty, if you decided on the Emacs 1.17 release (despite our recommendations), click here to get a detailed description of how get it up and running. Otherwise, keep on reading below.

Emacs 20.4 Install

Until we can find a work around for this with AppleScript, this process will have to be done each time you want to use Emacs. It's an excellent distro, so it's worth it. Start by launching Disk Copy again. Next, drag the unmounted Emacs file onto the Disk Copy window. It will mount a disk image on your desktop, ie:

will mount into

Next double-click the mounted disk image (the one on the right above) that's on your Desktop. Look for the Folder called "Mac" and double click it. You will get a window that looks like this:

See that circled file? That's the one you want to double-click. If your viewing preferences are set to show files and folder "As Icons" (instead of "As List"), then look for the icon that is bear. If you want to see the window exactly as you see it here, make sure the window is the active window and go up to "View" at the top and select "As List." It doesn't matter either way. So go ahead and double click the bear. Below is a cropped version of what you should see open up.

Now wasn't that easy?
