In addition to the required textbooks, there are a number of
supplemental readings which will be distributed during the
course. This page lists these readings. Papers not available
on-line will be handed out in class.
- Michael Hiltzik, Dealers of
Lightning: Xerox PARC and the Dawn of the Computer Age, 2000.
An excellent overview of the many contributions of the PARC
researchers. We will be focussing on two chapters that describe the
origins of the modern GUI desktop interface.
- Stuard Card, Thomas Moran and Allen
Newell. The Psychology of Human-Computer
Interaction, Lawrence Erlbaum, 1983.
We will be reading a short excerpt from the beginning of this classic
book that details some performance characteristics of the
perceptual, motor and cognitive subsystems of humans. (PDF)
