Scribe Guidelines
Scribe Guidelines
Each paper will be assigned one or two scribes.
A scribe has the following responsibilities:
-
Read the paper carefully, and prepare a one para summary of the
paper and post it to the class co-web page by NOON time of the day on which
the paper is to be discussed. The summary SHOULD NOT simply be the
abstract of the paper itself!
-
Give a 2-minute overview of the paper in class when called upon to do so.
-
Record the class discussion of the paper you are scribing.
-
Prepare and post to the co-web a summary of the class discussion on the paper
you are scribing.
-
Work with the other scribes for ALL the papers covered during the class
period and prepare a report connecting all the papers together in some
reasonable fashion.
For the papers you are scribing, ensure that you hit the following
points in the report:
-
What is the problem addressed in the paper?
-
What is the proposed solution approach?
-
What alternatives have been considered, not considered in this solution
approach?
-
What is good about the paper?
-
What is not so good about the paper?
-
What follow on work is possible to this paper?
Clarification (1/22/2003)
This has been discussed a fair amount in class, but for good measure
here's a summary:
- If there are n papers assigned and each paper has exactly
one scribe, then after all is said and done n + 1 Co-Web pages
will be created; n paper/discussion summary pages and one group
page for the day that contains a collaborative summary of how the
papers are related and such.
- You must have your paper summary up
by noon on the day of discussion, but it is perfectly acceptable to
modify that co-web page later to add a summary of the class discussion
on your paper and integrate ideas explored through the discussion.
- It's not required, but please use the co-web linking features to
do things like sign your summary page.
- If you have a question while preparing your individual or group
reports, please drop me or the professors an email and we'd be happy to
clarify.
