CS 4001a - Article Summary
Due: Tuesday, June 7th
General Description:
You are required to do research
on the class topic for the week
and return with an article that concerns the topic. You should supply
a copy of the article and a brief summary and critique. Turn in your
summary via the Swiki no later than one week from the time of
assignment.
Learning Objectives
- To describe and summarize the content and fundamental argument of
an
article in a concise format.
- To practice skills in critical reading and writing.
Deliverable Format
The assignment must include the
following:
- A copy of or link to the article used for this assignment.
The
article date should be no older than July 2003.
- Two pages containing the following
- A full citation providing the source of the article
- A paragraph abstract of the article
- A critical review of the article including the following
information
(although the following is presented as a list of questions, your
response
should be organized as coherent text):
- What is the issue that the article discusses?
- What is the author's position on the issue?
- What is the other side of the issue?
- How balanced was the article? Did the writer address both
sides
of the issue? Was there bias involved, and which side was it
slanted
toward? What is your evidence of this bias or imbalance?
- How effective was the article and why? What techniques did
the author
use to make it effective? What detracted from its effectiveness? How
could
the article's quality be improved?
- A paragraph describing your own position. Did you agree with
the article?
Did it support or change your opinion? If not, then why not?

Grading Criteria:
- 10 point scale
- 1 - Quality of article, choice of topic, and research
- 1 - Abstract
- 5 - Critical review
- 1 - Your opinion
- 2 - Quality of your writing
