USA Patriot Act Exercise

In groups of four or five, discuss The USA Patriot Act, and EFF Analysis of that act.

1. Develop the following lists:

1. What the government may do with little or no oversight:
• On a routine basis,
• If there is a reason for suspicion, and
• If there is probable cause that can be documented.
2. What the government may do with a court order.
3. What the government may not do.

2. Several provisions of the Patriot Act have been overturned by courts. Which ones and why? Summarize, and provide cites to news articles.

3. Look over the lists you made in part one, and assess the effect of the Patriot Act provisions on the stakeholders involved. Make recommendations for how the Patriot Act might be modified (or why it should stay as is). Explain why.
