Write an outline for your term paper. The outline will be structured as a series of major and minor section headings. Use as many levels of sub-headings as you need. In each section, you will include a list of points to make. The points should have citations to the bibliography. Your outline might look something like this (with more detail):

  1. Should cell phone use be banned in cars?
    1. Why the issue is important (cite 1)
    2. The controversy: is it really dangerous to use a cell phone while driving? (cite 2, 3)
  2. Background: the history of cell phone use
    1. First mobile phones invented in the 70s (cite 4, cite 5)
    2. Increasing ubiquity of cell phones (cite 6)
  3. Technological underpinnings and how they affect the controversy
    1. Talking on a cell phone is different than talking to a person in the car, because the person pauses when the driver needs to pay full attention. (cite 7)
    2. Dialing a number is the most dangerous part of use in cars (cite 8)
      1. Voice dialing is safer (Ibid.)
  4. The history of legislation regulating cell phone use in cars
    1. In the United states:
      1. First legislation in the US in place xxx said xxx (cite 9)
      2. Second legislation in the US in place xxx said xxx (cite 10)
      3. <etc>
    2. Legislation in Europe is quite different

<etc.>

Include a complete bibliography in your outline. Your bibliography should be formatted in correct APA style. See Appendix 2 of the Writing Arguments book for a guide to APA citation format.

By the time you hand in your outline, most of your research should be done.
