Paper #: Week 10 Paper 14 Title: Power conserving and access efficient indexes for wireless computing. (1) Problems This paper discusses the problem of mobile clients using too much battery power to stay connected wirelessly. The authors present their research work which indicates that power consumption can be reduced by adding some access time overhead. The authors present two access efficient indexing methods called cache schedule and integrated signature. (2) New Idea and Strengths - The problem that the authors address is a very pervasive problem. Research in this area is definitely a must and therefore the basic theme of the problem is very good. - The authors provide a nice overview of the problem domain and the working of wireless devices and services first so that the readers are able to understand more. - The hybrid index approach is very smart. The authors have thought well on this idea. It combines the advantages of the signature and the index tree techniques. - The use of diagrams helps in understanding some concepts. (3) Weaknesses and Extensions - The authors do not back up their ideas with any experimental results. This is a drawback of the paper and an extension to the paper would be the incorporation of the same. - Also, the results would make much more sense if they are compared to statistics of present wireless mechanisms. - The paper is not too well written. It is not extremely easy to understand and follow and an extension would be to make it more easy to understand. -- END --
