Paper #: 4.3.3.2 Title: Framework for Security and Privacy in Automotive Telematics 1. Problems "Automotive Telematics" refer to all statistical information gathered by a car with the intent of being transmitted and used by information gathering services. With the increase in usage of GPS and user data collection, the exposure of this information is a more pressing issue. Specifically, how can the information be collected and shared in such a way that the users are satisfiably protected. 2. New Idea and Strengths -Approaching the issue from a security standpoint is a strength in itself, as the issue has usually been a question of "how" rather than a question of "why". -The system is built from a secure basis, rather than just focusing on what information is transmitted. -By focusing on how the information is collected and transmitted, the privacy abilities of the user increase. By removing the information from the receiving party on the opposite end, the user is significantly more private. -Moving some information from constantly being transmitted to being stored locally makes sense, so that the user has time to apply privacy rules before deciding whether or not to send the information. -Establishing a privacy rule framework is helpful. If users were more aware of their privacy options, they would definitely take a greater interest in protecting themselves from exposure. 3. Weaknesses and Extensions -The paper mostly deals with the situation of benign usage, where the user's information is being legally obtained by interested companies. Malicious attacks and information stealing were not addressed, as well as security issues with the actual transmission, instead of just data usage. -There are more benefits to specific location information being transmitted than are discussed in the paper. Safety and emergency issues can be important, and delays in sending locational information in such cases could be detrimental. It is difficult to strike a balance between maintaining anonimity and simultaneously broadcasting location specific help information- this topic was not broached.
