Paper #: Week 4 Paper 1 Title: Energy aware adaptation for mobile applications (1) Problems We all know that mobile devices today are handicapped with the battery life that they offer. The paper addresses this problem and presents a solution which is quite unique. It suggests that by making the operating system and software applications adapt according to the energy demands of the user. In the course of the paper they also discuss a novel approach to reduce the energy drain caused by displays. (2) New Idea and Strengths - According to me the idea of lowering data fidelity is pretty novel. The authors actually show how it works in practice and show good results too. - the approach in reducing the fidelity in the map viewer and web browser is appealing. - the authors have done a good job in evaluating their approach. The setup and parameters are well thought out and the comparative approach in showing results is also very nice. - the authors have covered lots of aspects. Studying the effect of concurrent applications is one good example to support this. (3) Weaknesses and Extensions - Though the results are very impressive we should remember that they are restricted to the four applications - video player, speech recognizer, map viewer and Web browser. - the idea of reducing energy drain caused by displays though novel is far fetched right now as there is no hardware adhering to the requirements of the idea. - reducing fidelity in all applications may not be possible/ desirable. - an extension to this project - results from more than just one IBM laptop should be tested to completely back the theory. -- END --
