Instructions for Project, Final and grade distribution

 

1. A demo schedule has been posted under student presentation schedule - please let saurav know what slot you wish to

select. Give me a range of time so I can resolve scheduling conflits. All demos will happen in CRB database lab on

Thursday/Friday May 4-5.

 

2. Those who did papers (Henderson, Jianli Shen, John Yeh, McPherson White and Tariq/Farhan) should email their papers to saurav by

Wednesday May 3rd.

 

Papers should be 10-15 pages (12 font) and will be evaluated based on the criteria mentioned in the syllabus.

 

3. Those who did projects should bring their final reports in hardcopy and a cd containing a soft copy of their project contents and report when they come for the demo.

Each group member in the group project will also submit individually a statement of their own work on the project and their assessment of the work of

the other team members - send this by email to saurav.

 

4. Project reports will contain:

 

Problem Definition

Scope and targeted goals

Design/Architecture (ER diagram, rel design when applicable)

Functionality implemented and details of implementation environment

Assessment of what you designed and implemented

Future extensions

 

5. Final exam is open book, cumulative and addresses:

A- relational languages (algebra, calculus, SQL and QBE)

B- design and normalization including functional dependencies

C- transaction processing (chapters 17,18,19). This part will be emphasized.

 

6. Proposed grade distribution - in percentages:

Q1 (takehome): 8

Q2 (in class): 17

Q3 (takehome): 8

Q4 (in class): 17

Project/paper : 25

Final Exam : 25.

 

(each element above will be given a letter grade between 0 to 4 scale and a weighted average will be done).
