Description
This course is an orientation to graduate life and research for a PhD
student in the college of computing.
Objectives
- Gain familiarity with research areas and potential advisors in the College of Computing.
- Learn some technical skills to serve you in a research career.
- Learn how to cope with life as a graduate student.
- Have some fun along the way.
Responsibilities of students
- Arrive on time and attend all class meetings
- Participate in classes
- Engage with potential research areas
- Complete projects
Grading
- Mini-projects: 60%
- Presentation: 20%
- Attendance and participation: 20%

- Come talk to me: I want every student to come meet with me at
least once, either during my office hours or during a separate
appointment made via email. Of course, in addition to this meeting if
you have any questions or need any advice any time this fall, I'd be happy to meet with you.
Attendance policy
This course is designed to help you become familiar with the college
and its research breadth. Therefore, it is vitally important that you
attend as many classes as possible. However, you are allowed up to
four absences over the course of the term.
