CS 7450 - Presentation Advice

You will have five minutes and a maximum of five PowerPoint slides to describe the paper that you have been assigned. Your main idea is to present to the class they key concepts and ideas of the paper, and what it contributes to the field of Information Visualization.

You should begin by discussing what the purpose of the research is. What problems are the authors addressing? What is the purpose of the work? From there, describe the approach that the authors take, including just enough detail so that other students in class will gain an appreciation of what has been accomplished. Make sure to characterize the contribution(s) of the research. Feel free to add a little personal opinion at the end. What are the most significant aspects of the work? What would be next steps and future work?

It's always good to include plenty of figures and pictures in your slides to help describe the work. Also, search on-line: Are there demos or videos of the system and/or technique being presented? If so, consider showing them to the class. If you do have a demo or video, you can use a little extra time than your five minutes.

When you prepare slides, only use a modest amount of text. You should never write full sentences on slides. It's far better to include a few key words to highlight a point and then use your speaking description to fill in the details.

Administrative details: You must send your PowerPoint slides to Professor Stasko by midnight prior to the day before the day that you will be presenting (ie, midnight Sunday for a Tuesday lecture, and midnight Tuesday for a Thursday lecture). You must use the following PowerPoint slide template so that we can have a consistent look. On the first slide, include the citation information about the paper you're presenting as well as your name. You then have five more slides to work with.
