March 21, 2007
- Due to the recent problems with the Warp cluster (which should be
mostly fixed now), we will accept Project
2 submissions as late as 11:59pm Eastern Daylight Time on Thursday,
March 22. After that, project submissions will not be accepted (at all).
Please also note that the Project 3
deadline is unchanged, and is still April 6 (which is sooner than it
sounds).
March 8, 2007
- Although we are not extending the deadline for
Project 2, we will accept submissions
*without late penalty* as long as they are turned in by 11:59pm on
Wednesday, March 21. (That's Eastern *Daylight Savings* time - don't forget
to "spring ahead" this weekend!)
- Dave is taking the qualifier exam on Thrusday, March 15 and will
therefore not hold office hours that day. He will also not be available at
any other time that day (even if he is physically in the lab), nor will he
be available to answer emails or newsgroup posts. Additionally, because of
Spring Break, he will not be holding any office hours the week of March
19-23, but should be available via email and the newsgroup during that
week.

- The broken review question links on the
lectures page have been fixed. Three sample
midterms have also been added to the page.

Course Description
CS 6210 (Advanced Operating Systems) is a graduate level course that covers
in detail many advanced topics in operating system design and implementation.
It starts with topics such as operating systems structuring, multithreading and
synchronization and then moves on to systems issues in parallel and distributed
computing systems. There is no textbook for this course. Rather, we will read
and discuss a number of important research papers related to these topics. For
each paper that is covered in class , students are
expected to gain a solid understanding of the problem that is addressed by the
paper, and the solution proposed by the authors. Papers listed under
"Required Background" will be assigned for self study.
Students must carefully read the self study papers because the understanding of
their content may be essential for the papers that will be covered in class.
Papers listed under "Optional Readings are for reference only.
These papers will cover topics that extend or supplement the material in papers
that are covered in class. Students will be expected to have some understanding
of the results in these papers but will not be tested on them.
