What is the term paper?
For your individual term project, you will research an issue about which you are initially undecided. Your final assignment for the course will be an argument in which you take a stand on this issue.
What structure should it have?
There is no specific structure for the term paper that we are mandating. Use
whichever one you think is most effective for your argument. Take a strong stand on your issue, and argue it at length using all of the tools you've learned about in class (ethos, pathos, logos; Toulmin system with strong reasons and specific evidence from your many sources, etc.). This is similar to previous homeworks and such, but there should be a lot more thought, strong reasons, and especially research, evidence, and sources on the subject.
How long should it be?
The paper should be about 5 pages, double-spaced. This is a soft limit; you may go over (within reason) if you really feel it is necessary to make your argument stronger. Do not exceed it by an unreasonable amount.
How should we cite our many references?
In terms of references, there isn't a set formatting that we are mandating, but pick ONE (APA, Harvard, etc.) and keep it consistent throughout the paper.
Can I use first-person in the term paper?
In places where you are stating or defending your opinion, you can use first person. Try not to make very frequent use of it, however.
