Exam Policy

The three exams will be conducted during lecture periods as indicated on the syllabus. The exams will cover concepts, as well as coding; however, you may expect coding to constitute a significant portion of the exam. It is expected that you will be familiar with the material from any programming homework that is due prior to an exam and able to work any problems that are from those homeworks, or similar to them with relative ease. While we will ask questions that directly relate to the homework, they may be slight variations on what was presented in those assignments- therefore, it is very important to understand the material, not just to memorize things if you wish to do well in this course. Furthermore, we may ask you to code something that you have not seen at all before, but which you should be able to code from your understanding of the concepts involved. There are no cheat-sheets or calculators allowed.

All students are expected to attend the exams. Forgetting about the exam or simply missing it are not proper excuses and will receive a zero score. If sickness or personal circumstances will prevent you from taking an exam, you must notify the instructor prior to the start of the exam, that is, early enough so that you get confirmation from the instructor about the absence. Simply emailing the instructor a few minutes before the exam is not sufficient.

If a student misses an exam due to a legitimate illness, we will not administer a make-up exam. Instead, we will substitute the student's percentage on the final exam for the missed exam's percentage. Note that this does not mean that anyone can substitute the final exam grade for another exam's grade or simply decide not to take an exam. The policy only applies for legitimate excused absences.

IMPORTANT:

In addition to the total overall class percentages for determining your grade, you must have a passing grade (>60 average) based on the 3 exams and the final (combined) to pass the course as well. See the grading policy page for more details about this.

You have two weeks from the time the TA's review the exams to challenge an exam grade.  After the two week period has passed, the grade will stand as is.  Challenges should be made with specific issues and on specific questions.
