Please refer to the Policies-Syllabus and Weekly Plan for information on the general structure and expectations of this course.

Description
CS2250 is not designed to be so difficult that the vast majority of students cannot obtain an "A." However, such a grade should and will signify that a student has expended appropriate effort, of sufficient precision, to gain competency in our subjects of study. I suggest that all students make it their goal to earn a top score without either overdoing it or taking a lazy route. With this idea of balance in mind, I offer the following two incentives.

1. Final Exam Exemption.

The table below shows the anticipated points accumulation for this quarter:

Final Exam Finals Week
40
. Anticipated Total 160 Points

Here's the Deal:
On a scale of 160 points, one must earn 144 for an "A," or 90%. Those students who earn 144 or more points, on assignments, the midterm, and extra credit (items turned in by 28 August 1998, or 26 August 1998 for graduating seniors), qualify not to take the final exam, because they have demonstrated ample proficiency in the course. NOTE: In order to receive an exemption pass for the exam, a student must have turned in 7 out of 7 assignments during the quarter.

2. Extra Credit Program.

The point totals above are the "standard curve," and do not reflect either 1) extra credit options on your assignments or 2) extra credit which you may earn by participating in training at the Georgia Tech Library.

I will attempt to provide limited instruction in use of some particular electronic search tools available on campus. However, the Library offers additional assistance through one-hour sessions, focused on specific topics.

Pre-registration for these sessions is not necessary, and a schedule appears on the back of the "extra credit voucher" attached to your syllabus packet (also available outside my office door, CoC Room 119). Observe these guidelines:

  1. Plan ahead to coordinate your class schedule with the Library's offerings.
  2. Make sure to obtain a "Certificate of Attendance" from the instructor, after the class.
  3. Choose up to three sessions from the following:
    GTEL
    GALILEO
    Business Resources
    Engineering Resources
  4. Attend one class, earn 5 points. Attend two, earn 12 points (6 each). Attend three, earn 21 points!
  5. Fill in the voucher with evaluation comments, staple your certificates to it, and turn in by 28 August 1998 (5pm deadline; noon on 26 August for graduating seniors).
