General Course Policies
Summer 1998
GT College of Computing
The following policies appear in the Course Syllabus:
Attendance Policies
- Your attendance is valued! Lectures and class exercises provide most of the background and evaluative information which you'll need to complete your assignments successfully. (Handouts will be available outside my office door, in the event that you miss class.)
- To encourage faithful attendance, extra credit of one point for each class you attend is available, but only if you sign the weekly roster sheet within fifteen minutes of the start of class. The extra points can help a lot...
- You may attend lecture, turn in assignments, and pick up graded work at any of the scheduled sections each week.
NOTE!
Due to the July 4th holiday, Sections B & C will be out-of-synch with Section A until the midterm occurs. Usually I don't mind students attending lecture in any section, but for Summer '98 I recommend that students stay in their registered section until midterm time--or at least, if you're going to attend a different lecture, do so consistently for the first few weeks.

Standards for Assignments
- Assignments are now posted as downloadable files on this webpage.
-
Important: Please note your section and mark the letter on all assignments, exams, etc.--anything you turn in, especially graded work. Points may be deducted for failing to provide your section code.
-
Assignments are officially DUE at class time for your registered section during the week listed at the top of each assignment ("due the week of..."). However, your work is not officially LATE until 5:00pm on Friday of that week. At 5pm, the College of Computing is locked, so after that time you can't get to my office to put your work under the door. I recommend handing in assignments during class each week. I also recommend picking up graded work promptly.
-
Late work will be assessed a penalty of one (1) point for every five (5) the assignment is worth. No extra credit points are available on late assignments. No exceptions will be made to this policy without written notification concerning your crisis from a Dean (or Advisor) to the Instructor.
-
Assignments One, Two, and Three will not be accepted after 5pm on Friday 24 July, 1998; zero points will be available after that time. Assignments Four through Seven will not be accepted after 5pm on the Friday, 28 August, 1998; zero points will be available after that time. No exceptions, as above.
-
Students are expected to complete all assignments for CS2250 by themselves. Collaboration is encouraged only to locate materials, interpret instructions, or devise (but not conduct) electronic searches. In other words, if you work with a partner or group, each student may assist others only in targeting but not in locating the exact answers for each exercise. Point to the right shelf or hand someone a book, but not open to the right page or dogeared or marked at the appropriate spot. Discuss the right database or keywords, but don't type others' searches for them. Copying assignments, answers, or printouts is prohibited and considered "Academic Misconduct" and will be prosecuted as an Honor Code violation.
- As noted in the "Caveat" above, students are responsible for being aware of changes to assignments and should monitor the newsgroup git.cc.class.2250. Errors due to failure to follow instructions carefully may not earn full credit.

Use of Library Resources
-
When assignments require use of Library references, always remember that more than 150 of your colleagues will need the same materials during the same general time.
-
Courtesy demands rigorous discipline in reshelving volumes precisely, even in sections where Library staff usually reshelve for you. Never hide key materials or discard them on a table; depriving classmates of access to important resources or marking Library materials to indicate location of answers is prohibited and considered "Academic Misconduct," as above.
-
Respect the integrity of the Library as an archive. Never mark or mutilate items. Use photocopiers which support a book's spine with a hanging edge to prevent cracking the spine flat. Return or renew Library materials promptly.

Grading System
- Refer to the notes regarding late penalties, above.
- Students earn points for assignments and exams. (Refer to extra credit and attendance, above.) Simple percentages equate to the standard grade values.
- The TA will post a spreadsheets of students' points to the Web. Please check for errors. You must report a missing assignment within two weeks after it's due.

Exams
- A midterm and final exam will occur, with no exemptions offerred, except as noted in performance incentives.
-
Graduating seniors will schedule their final exam before the last class period.
Best of luck for a productive quarter! Your conscientious and adventurous attitude is the surest way to succeed in CS2250.
