It's a losing proposition...

...trying to please everyone when it comes to posting downloadable files on the Web ... because everyone has a different "favorite platform." This page is currently under construction, and although I will do my best to have all lectures available by Dead Week, I won't make any guarantees. Please be patient.

In the past, I have resisted posting lecture notes or slides publically, because the slides do not represent everything that I say in the lecture or that is important for the course. For this reason, here's my disclaimer:

DO NOT

rely on these slides instead of taking notes. Some slide-sets are more complete than others, in terms of providing "all" the details from a lecture. As you know, I sometimes use the board or printouts from database-searches: these notes are not represented on the slides. The slides are not a comprehensive presentation of the course material.

In addition, students in Summer's Section A may frequently notice that the slides posted here don't look like the ones we use in class. That's because I'm gradually converting each lecture to a MS PowerPoint presentation: the conversion usually happens Thursday afternoon, after our class time. So don't be too thrown; the material is the same, and the slides may actually be more complete than the ones from class.

Notes about format

Please keep in mind that I am not your best source of information about technical bugs you may encounter using these materials: I suggest working with assistants in various computer clusters, or sending email to help@cc.gate ch.edu. I have prepared these files as best I can in consultation with experienced users here at the CoC.

Two formats available for download:
  1. The first format listed in the table below is simple PostScript (.ps). You can download these files to an account for later printing. To view them onscreen, I understand that UNIX machines can use functions of Ghostscript, such as the browser plug-in Ghostview.

  2. The second format available is .pdf (PostScript Display Format). To view .pdf files, download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and install it on your workstation. HINT: Acrobat is already available on Library cluster workstations for use with certain GALILEO databases, so you may wish to use those machines to view CS2250 slides, although you will have to pay for printouts.

The following table contains links to available slides-files. I will make each link "active" when the slide-file is posted to the server.
