The Application server for the CoC Intel NT Cluster has a hardware failure. Replacement parts should be in Saturday morning. If this is the only problem with the server, it should be operational sometime Saturday or Sunday. If there is further damage, we'll have to order more parts or look at alternative solutions. However, until then, the cluster will behave as follows:
The most important point is that students can login and run any
program installed locally if they run it from the command line.
However, the login process will take longer then usual. Users can
still get to the H: Drives (Their UNIX Home Directory). They can
still ftp, telnet, etc from the command line or from the Run Command.
They Cannot access their profiles in any way, access any
application on the shared server, or access the programs item on
their start menu. They can still run most locally installed
programs including Netscape, Cafe, Motivate, and others (primarily
helper apps). If they try to run something that lives on the
application server (Jefferson) it will sit there for awhile before
timing out and returning control to the user. It will also do this
if they try to access the Programs section of the start menu or
search the path for something. (The application server is in the
path.) They CANNOT Print directly from NT. They can however print
to a PS file and then ftp that elsewhere. They can also still use
the floppy & CD-ROM.
We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused, and will have the equipment fixed asap.
