General information about the course:

Senior group software design project including definition, design, implementation, testing and documentation of a significant software system. This course must be followed by CS 4307 in consecutive quarters. Prereq: Intro to Software Engineering.

GOALS:

• Provide the students with a system design experience under faculty guidance that is similar to that encountered by computing professionals.
• Sharpen the students' skill in written and oral communication.
• Develop students' organizational, managerial and personal interaction skills in addition to their technical expertise.

CS 4306 and CS 4307 form a two quarter project sequence.  Students are organized  into groups of (typically) 3 to 5 individuals to propose, design, implement and use real world software projects with a specific customer (either on or off campus).  Weekly group meetings will be scheduled with the instructor to assess progress. Oral and written reports will be required for project proposals, final demonstrations, etc.

The first quarter is largely devoted to developing the design of the system and associated documentation.  Specific milestones include forming teams, selecting a project, preparing and presenting the project proposal (including interviews with users, specifying user requirements, deliverables and schedule for completion), develop the system design, test plan, acceptance plan and perhaps an initial prototype.

The second quarter will involve producing a detailed design and finally, implementing and testing the system. Periodic design reviews and interim report(s) will be required.

At all times it should be clear to students that system requirements and system design are subject to change.  Any modifications should be reflected in subsequent updated versions of the original requirements and design documents.  A final system will be presented at the end of the second quarter to both the customer and senior design project advisor.
