Each of you must do a project of your own devising. I will provide advice and suggestions. Reasonable projects could be a speech, character, or handwriting recognition system, or a system that learns to play a game (checkers, backgammon, pacman, ...) well by practicing it. I would like to see a UNIX based system that could scan a fax and convert it to email, or a system that could take a voice phone message and turn it into email. I would also like to see a system that could take printed Japanese characters and look them up in a Japanese to English dictionary.
To encourage you to work on the project early in the quarter, I will ask you to post weekly progress reports to the class news group. I will also ask for a "beta" project demonstration before Drop Date.
