Research News
Focused Research Program (FRP) funding has been awarded for proposals on high performance computing and web science, coordinated by College of Computing Associate Professor David A. Bader and co-coordinated by Associate Professors Amy Bruckman and Milena Mihail, respectively. An FRP is a grant given by the Georgia Tech Provost's Office for inter-departmental initiatives. In all, fifteen proposals across campus for FRPs were submitted, five of which were approved. SPARC Group Makes Strong Contribution to Top ACM SIGSOFT Three papers from members of the SPARC Group were presented at the International Symposium on Software Testing and
Analysis (ISSTA 2007), July 9-12 in London, UK. The Symposium is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (SIGSOFT), and is the premier conference on software testing and program analysis. People@CoC Mustaque Ahamad to Speak at AT&T Symposium GTISC Director Mustaque Ahamad will present on "Security Challenges for Voice over IP Systems" at the AT&T University Collaborations Symposium, to be held in Florham Park, New Jersey, August 1-2. Mike Hunter Attends Next-Gen Telecommunications Conference Mike Hunter traveled to New York City for Columbia Principles, Systems and Applications of IP Telecommunications (IPTCOMM) at Columbia University. IPTCOMM is "a platform for researchers from academia and research labs, industry and government to share their ideas, views, results and experiences in the field of IP-based telecommunication." The security of next-generation telecommunications is a key area for GTISC, and attending IPTCOMM made a lot of connections for GTISC and also provided lots of research to review. College of Computing Faculty Attend Microsoft Research Summit Associate Professors David Bader, Tucker Balch, Frank Dellaert and Irfan Essa, and Assistant Professor Charles Isbell all participated in the Microsoft Research Faculty Summit 2007, held July 15-17 in Redmond, Washington. The summit brought together more than 400 thought leaders from academia, government, and Microsoft to discuss both the maturing of the computing disciplines and the range of open opportunities for research and development. David Bader's New Book To Be Released Associate Professor David Bader's book "Petascale Computing: Algorithms and Applications" will be released in December by CRC Press. The book provides the first edited collection on petascale algorithms and applications for computational science and engineering and features solutions for scaling up algorithms that are currently in development. Sy Goodman Presents at US State Department Professor Sy Goodman, joint with the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, gave a two hour presentation on "ICT and Information Security in Africa" as part of a multiagency gathering at the US State Department on July 9. Professor Goodman also recently was a coordinator and speaker, with Granger Morgan, at a session on "Cybersecurity, Counterterrorism, and Homeland Security," during the 2007 MacArthur Grantees Meeting, AAAS Center for Science, Technology, and Security Policy in Washington, DC on June 27-29.
