The new Georgia Tech trade show booth debuted at Supercomputing 2007 last month, November 12-15 in Reno , Nevada . The College of Computing Office of Communications developed the strategy for the show presence and designed the booth, which earned an invitation to serve on the SC08 Communications Committee. GVU 15 Anniversary Celebration and Symposium

On October 25th, the GVU Center celebrated Fifteen years of impact. GVU alumni and current faculty and students gathered for a full day symposium and celebration. This special day in GVU history began with keynotes from world renowned speakers Dr Andy van Dam, from Brown University, and anthropologist Genevieve Bell, director of Intel's User Experience group. Later at the GVU 15 Awards Ceremony, fifteen recipients were awarded for their contributions catalyzing GVU’s ability to impact the world.

GVU Moves Augmented Reality Experience Out of the Lab

Researchers from the GVU Center have installed AR Façade at the Grand Text Auto exhibition at the Beall Center for Art and Technology in Irvine, CA. The AR Façade installation presents an augmented reality version of desktop-based game Façade. The exhibit marks the first time that the elaborate “augmented reality” interactive drama has been seen outside the GVU lab.

CoC Graduate Student Council (GSC) Announces its 2007-2008 Executive Committee

The College of Computing Graduate Student Council has announced the 2007-2008 Executive Committee. The Graduate Student Council is comprised of graduate students interested in bettering the College of Computing. Its mission consists of specific goals like representing the rights and interests of CoC graduate students at the College and Institute level, improving the Ph.D. and M.S. programs in the College of Computing for present and future students and fostering a sense of pride and community among the students, faculty and staff of the CoC. The new executive committee roles are:

David Bader Releases First Book on Petascale Computing at SC07

The College of Computing and Chapman & Hall/CRC Press announced the launch of “Petascale Computing: Algorithms and Applications”, the first published collection on petascale techniques for computational science and engineering, at the SC07 conference in Reno , NV last month. Edited by David A. Bader, this collection represents an academic milestone in the high-performance computing industry and is the first work to be released through Chapman & Hall/CRC Press’ new Computational Science series.

Communications Office Wins 5 MarCom Awards

The College of Computing Office of Communications received five MarCom Creative Awards for branding, publicity, website design and speechwriting work completed in 2006 and 2007. The Office of Communications was awarded two Platinum Awards (best in show) for the overall “New Face of Computing” brand campaign and the “New Face of Computing” publicity campaign; two Gold Awards for the College of Computing Home Page Design and Overall Website; and one Honorable Mention in Speech writing for the Inaugural State of the College Address. The MarCom Creative Awards is an international competition administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals. Over 5,000 entries were received in this year’s MarCom Awards, which has grown to be the largest competition of its kind in the world. CoC Communications has won six industry awards overall in 2007.

Foley Scholars Endowment Fund Reaches Over Quarter of a Million

The Foley Scholars Endowment Fund has garnered over a quarter of a million dollars from colleagues, former students and friends around the country. GVU Center Director Beth Mynatt announced the establishment of this fund during GVU’s 15th Anniversary Celebration in October 2007. Named for Dr. James D. Foley, professor and founder of the GVU Center, the endowment will support annual fellowships to exceptional students involved in research at the GVU Center.

Supercomputing 2007 – New Book, New Booth, New Beginning for Georgia Tech at the Industry’s Largest Conference

Georgia Tech’s activities at the Supercomputing 2007 (SC07) conference in Reno, NV last month signaled a major step forward for the Institute as it continues to secure its position as a leader in high performance computing. Besides the launch of David Bader’s book on petascale techniques for CSE, the Office of Communications had developed the SC07 trade show strategy for Georgia Tech, and designed a new 20x20 trade show booth which included a looping presentation on Georgia Tech’s prominence in HPC research, education, and leadership. Attendee reaction to Georgia Tech’s updated image was indicative of the importance of presenting the Institute as the powerhouse program that it is at external conferences and shows such as this. Currently, Communications is working out a rental policy for the modular, customizable booth. View pictures of the show and booth on the CoC Flickr! site.
