RoboCup 2007 Atlanta includes a Nanogram Soccer Demonstration Competition. The image at right shows a photomicrograph of the field, which measures 2.5 millimeters across. Inset is the nanosoccer ball, about the diameter of a human hair. Visit the NIST website or RoboCup 2007 Atlanta for more.

ARC ThinkTank Faculty Organize and Present at DIMACS/GT Workshops

Eric Vigoda presented a tutorial on analyzing Markov chains at a DIMACS workshop on Markov Chain Monte Carlo: from Theory to Practice (June 4-7) and Dana Randall co-organized a DIMACS/GT workshop on "Puzzling Mathematics and Mathematical Puzzles" (June 8-9) in honor of Peter Winkler's 60th birthday.

Santosh Vempala Gives Talk at Conference on Learning Theory

Santosh Vempala gave a talk on "Spectral Algorithms for Learning and Clustering" at the Twentieth Annual Conference on Learning Theory (COLT 2007) which was held from June 13-15 in Sand Diego. Two speakers are invited to speak at the conference each year.

David Bader Leads Discussions at Microsoft Manycore Workshop

Microsoft sponsored an invitation-only "Manycore Computing" workshop on June 20-21 in Seattle with discussion led by several high-performance computing experts. David Bader served as a panelist and discussed Manycore algorithm design. The workshop had over 100 participants with small breakout discussions in areas such as applications, programming, architectures, and tools and libraries.

Jarek Rossignac Chairs Shape Modeling Conference

Jarek Rossignac, Professor in the School of Interactive Computing co-chaired the Shape Modeling International conference on June 13-15 in Lyon, France. Shape Modeling International (SMI) provides a forum for the dissemination of new computational techniques for modeling and processing digital representations of shapes and their properties to a community of academic and industrial experts across a wide range of areas. Jarek also visited CREATIS to discuss collaboration on his Shape Bank project for the analysis and distribution of 3D and 4D medical images.

Ph.D. Student Awarded Fellowship by Kodak

Kodak recently awarded a fellowship to Ph.D. student Brian Landry who is working under the direction of Professor Mark Guzdial in the School of Interactive Computing. Brian's research focuses on the design and development of a multimedia story-authoring tool, an area of interest to Kodak. Catherine Newell of Kodak's Photographic Science & Technology Center will act as Brian's mentor and primary liaison for this collaboration. The Kodak fellowship is an academic outreach initiative that provides financial assistance to graduate students inside university departments that have been selected by Kodak on the basis of academic excellence. In 2007, Kodak is supporting ten Ph.D. students from various universities across the U.S. and Canada.

Communications Launches "5th Street" - A Monthly Column on Commercialization in Atlanta Business Magazine

Starting in July a newcomer to the local business press, Atlanta Business Magazine, will run a monthly column called "5th Street" which will focus on commercialization and venture activity at Tech. The premiere issue in June featured an article by Rich DeMillo titled "Murder, Starvation, & Catastrophe: What Easter Island Can Teach Us About 21st Century Innovation."

College of Computing Hosts Prospective Students for "Girls Night Out" and "Preview"

The College of Computing Office of Diversity and Community welcomed over 80 female students to the college during the Office of Undergraduate Admissions' Girls Night Out Program on June 25th and 600 prospects from across the country for "Preview" on June 29th. The Girls Night Out program is an overnight recruitment event that attracts high caliber women from across the country to take a closer look at GT. The College of Computing conducted an information session and tour hosted by our CC Ambassadors, attended an academic forum and Deans panel to promote awareness of all the CoC Women's initiatives at the college. For "Preview," the Office of Diversity and Community along with the CC Ambassadors conducted a series of information sessions, tours, student panels, Deans panel and academic forums for visiting families.

College of Computing to Host NACAC Summer Institute Dinner

The Office of Diversity and Community and the Office of Undergraduate Admission will be hosting over 100 high school and college counselors from across the country on July 10th. Dean DeMillo will be addressing the high school counselors. The counselors are visiting GT through the NACAC 2007 Summer Institute for educational counseling professionals. The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), founded in 1937, is an organization of more than 9,800 professionals from around the world dedicated to serving students as they make choices about pursuing post secondary education.
