CSE Faculty Lead National Research Effort in Data and Visual Analytics
A team of five Georgia Tech researchers, led by Haesun Park of CSE, has won a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)to lead and coordinate a new initiative on foundational research in visual analytics of massive data and information sets. John Stasko and Alexander Gray of CSE are among the five principal researchers on this project, along with faculty from Math and Industrial and Systems Engineering.
A first-of-its-kind award, this grant establishes the College of Computing as the lead academic research institution for all national Foundations of Data and Visual Analytics (FODAVA) research efforts, which begins July 1.
Web Science Initiative Promotes Interdisciplinary Approach
A new interdisciplinary research initiative on web science has just been launched at CoC. Web technologies are playing an increasingly central role in business, education, entertainment, health and research. Headed by Amy Bruckman (Social Computing), Milena Mihail (Theory), Constantine Dovrolis (Networking) and Irfan Essa (Computational Journalism), the initiative seeks to understand the impact of the Internet and help invent its future, as well as strengthen ties among disciplines across campus and explore possible new interdisciplinary educational programs. Professor gets Indian Defense Research Contract
Mani Subramanian, adjunct professor in the School of Computer Science and Visiting Analog Devices Chair Professor at IIT Madras, India, has received a research grant for $100,000 from the Indian Defence Services to conduct a project, titled “Network Security Simulator for Training and Exercise,” that will examine security breaches in a simulated network.
Samantika Subramiam Gets Intel Fellowship
Computer Science grad student Samantika Subramaniam has received the Intel Ph.D. Fellowship Award, which includes full tuition and fees, a stipend and a new laptop. It also covers the costs for visiting an Intel campus to meet with her assigned Intel mentor. Subramaniam, whose adviser is Assistant Professor Gabriel Loh, is working on her Ph.D. in computer architecture and microprocessor design. She is scheduled to graduate in May 2009.
Design Computing and Cognition Conference Held at CoC
Ashok Goel, associate professor in the School of Interactive Computing, chaired the Third International Conference on Design Computing and Cognition at Georgia Tech June 21-25. The DCC'08 conference included seven workshops—among them the Second International Workshop on Design Creativity organized by the Design Society—and a doctoral student symposium funded by a $25,000 NSF grant. Twenty-two Ph.D. students attended the symposium, held June 21-22. The local conference organization committee included Ellen Do, Chuck Eastman and Spencer Rugaber. Charmion Richards managed the conference, assisted by Jacquelyn Berry and graduate students Michael Helms, Iulian Radu and Swaroop Vattam.
Vijay Vazirani Speaks in China and Sweden
Computer science Professor Vijay Vazirani was invited to speak at two international conferences this summer, where he is presenting his paper “Nash Bargaining via Flexible Budget Markets.” The first conference was the Fourth International Conference on Algorithmic Aspects in Information and Management (AAIM 2008), held June 23-25 at Fudan University in Shanghai. That conference is intended to provide a forum for researchers working in design and analysis of algorithms, game theory and combinatorial optimization to present their newest results. The second conference is the 11th Scandinavian Workshop on Algorithm Theory (SWAT), to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, July 2-4. SWAT is a biennial international conference intended as a forum for researchers in design and analysis of algorithms and data structures.
Record Number of CoC Students Intern at Microsoft
Sixteen College of Computing students were hired as interns at Microsoft this summer. They are: Abhimanyu Aditya, Krystian Alberciak, Hasaan Butt, Madhav Deshpande, Alejandro Dominguez, Carolina Gomez, Malini Jagannadhan, Mugdha Jamsandekar, Mukil Kesavan, Sana Khan, Raghavendra Thallam Kodandaramaih, Long Lu, Chaitanya Prakash Namburi, Aninda Ray, Abilash Sekar and Kendrick Treadwell.
CSE Professor Leads Team to TeraGrid ’08 Award
P.K. Yeung, adjunct professor in computational science and engineering, was part of a team that received a 5K Club award at TeraGrid ’08 for demonstrated achievement in scientific research using very large numbers of processors. The team, which also included Diego Donzis (University of Maryland) and Dmitry Pekurovsky (San Diego Supercomputer Center), presented a Science Track paper, titled “Turbulence Simulation on O (4) Processors.” The third annual TeraGrid Conference was held in Las Vegas on June 9-13.
3D Graphics and Computer Vision Conference Held at CoC
Interactive Computing Professors Frank Dellaert and Jarek Rossignac chaired the Fourth International Symposium on 3D Data Processing, Visualization and Transmission (3DPVT'08), held in the Klaus Building, June 18-20. This conference, which brought together nearly 100 researchers working in the intersection of 3D graphics and computer vision, featured invited talks by seven distinguished speakers from academia and industry, including Google and Microsoft, and 50 peer-reviewed papers. The symposium was sponsored by National Science Foundation and Microsoft Research. IC Grad Student Wins Best Paper Award
Shwetak Patel, a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Interactive Computing took home the Best Paper Award from the Pervasive Computing 2008 conference, held May 19-22 in Sydney, Australia. Gregory Abowd, Patel’s faculty adviser, and Matt Reynolds, former senior research scientist in IC and now assistant professor at Duke University, contributed to the winning paper, titled “Detecting Human Movement by Differential Air Pressure Sensing in HVAC System Ductwork: An Exploration in Infrastructure Mediated Sensing.” Patel also won the Best Paper and Best Presentation awards at Ubicomp 2007 and was nominated for best paper at the Pervasive Computing conference in 2006. In his five years as a graduate student at the College of Computing, Patel has published nine full papers at these two top forums for research in ubiquitous computing.
GTISC Gets Donation of VoIP Equipment
Cisco has given $69,000 worth of VoIP equipment to GTISC so the center can continue cutting-edge research in VoIP security with enterprise-quality equipment.
