Scribbling in Class

Celia Vullo and Maria Vasquez work on their computer- programmed and Bluetooth controlled robot called the Scribbler™, which is the centerpiece of the CS 1301 curriculum. GTISC Hosts 2007 Asterisk Developer Conference

A group of Asterisk developers met May 22-25 for 4 days of hacking, coding, testing, and designing. The event was hosted by GTISC at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center and included developers from the United States, Germany, UK, Sweden, Israel and China. Asterisk is a complete, open-source IP PBX (telephone switching system within an enterprise) in software.

Georgia Computes! Provides Summer Camp Curriculum and Workshops

Camps at Kennesaw State, Columbus State, Darton College, and Georgia Southwestern will be conducted to attract middle school and high school students to computing. The faculty at these institutions attended a workshop on May 8 to learn the logistics and curriculum of running such camps. The Georgia Computes! project conducted a workshop May 11-12 for University System of Georgia faculty to learn how we teach introductory computer science.  Faculty from Georgia Perimeter, Macon State, and Columbus State attended. Georgia Computes! is an NSF "Broadening Participation in Computing" alliance focused on increasing the number and diversity of computing students in the state of Georgia.

Mike Hunter Presents at Department of Defense Conference

GTISC Research Scientist Mike Hunter presented a paper on VoIP security research at the Department of Defense Intelligence Information Systems (DoDIIS) Worldwide Conference in Chicago, April 29-May 4.  GTISC was asked to give this talk by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as part of the upcoming GTISC/DIA VoIP security partnership.  The talk was well received and garnered a significant number of encore votes from attendees.  Discussed in depth was GTISC research in both VoIP covert channels and VoIP spam.

Sy Goodman Chairs United Nations Agency Meeting on Cybersecurity

Sy Goodman, joint professor with the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, was a General Chairperson of "Partnerships for Global Cybersecurity," at the 2nd WSIS Action Line C5 Facilitation Meeting, held on May 14-15, 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland. Sy was also the panel chair for three sessions on "The Changing Cybersecurity Threat Environment and Innovative Solutions," "National Strategies," and "Watch Warning and Incident Response." The meeting was held at the headquarters of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations agency, in conjunction with a cluster of events 14-25 May surrounding World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (May 17th).

Vijay Vazirani Speaks at Stanford School of Engineering

Vijay Vazirani gave a talk at the Stanford University School of Engineering Department of Management Science and Engineering on May 29, 2007 titled "Markets and the Primal-Dual Paradigm." The department invites a small set of distinguished researchers each year to give a talk intended for a broad audience. Other talks this year have included speakers from Stanford and Harvard Universities.

Haesun Park Co-chairs Stanford Conference

CSE Professor Haesun Park was a chair for the "Stanford 50: State of the Art and Future Directions of Computational Mathematics and Numerical Computing" conference which was held at Stanford University, March 29-31, 2007. Over 250 researchers attended the meeting and contemplated upon the state of the art and the next fifty years of numerical computing. The conference is considered to be one of the most significant meetings in decades in the areas of computational mathematics and numerical computing. Professor Park received a substantial award as the PI from the CCF division of the National Science Foundation to support the conference.

Cristobal Alvarez Wins Goizueta Fellowship

CoC PhD student Cristobal Alvarez has been selected as a Goizueta Foundation Fellow beginning Fall semester 2007. Fellowship award recipients are selected on the basis of their academic record, standardized test scores, educational goals, and letters of recommendations. Only a limited number of Goizueta Foundation Fellowships are awarded each year.

David Bader Joins IBM Technical Leadership Forum

Associate Professor David A. Bader was selected as the first academic member of the IBM Technical Leadership Forum and attended the forum’s recent meeting held at the IBM Executive Briefing Center in Mainz, Germany, on May 3-4, 2007. The meeting included about 32 members of the forum as well as a dozen IBM VP’s, CTO’s, and Distinguished Engineers. The IBM Technical Leadership Forum is comprised of high-tech representatives from around the world who serve as an advisory board for IBM on information technologies.

College of Computing Awards Posthumous Degree to Daniel Compton

On April 18th, the Institute Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (IUCC) approved the granting of a posthumous degree for CS undergraduate Daniel Compton. Compton died last year and would have been a senior graduating this month. Friends of the deceased, Victor Jaworski and James Gaines, along with Compton's father, Jim Compton, lead the effort to have Compton recognized with a posthumous degree. Compton was a co-op student and attended Georgia Tech in good standing from Fall 2002 to Spring 2006.

Administrative News

Upgrade to the CoC Website Launches This Month

The Communications Office has been working since November on a retooling of the College of Computing website, which will go live later this month. Webmaster Bryan Jordin has implemented a new, feature-rich content management system called Plone as the site's new back end. Highlights of the upgrade include site-wide RSS links for news and events, easier-to-use hierarchical navigation, live search, new multimedia content and a much faster interface. A full list of new features will be released with the launch.

Volunteers Still Needed for RoboCup 2007 Atlanta

Volunteers are needed for RoboCup 2007 Atlanta, the world's premier research robotics competition. This year's event is hosted by Georgia Tech from June 30th to July 10th and will include approximately 218 senior robot teams and 140 junior teams from over 20 countries. Don't miss your chance to be a part of this exciting event.

Computational Media Academic Advising Ranked Best on Campus

In its April 2007 report, the Georgia Tech Office of Assessment reported the Computational Media (CM) Interdisciplinary Degree at the College of Computing and the School of Literature, Communication and Culture ranked highest on campus among students for academic advising.

69 CM students surveyed ranked the program's advising with an average score of 3.86 out of 4. David White, jointly appointed with the College of Computing and the School of Literature, Communication and Culture and Academic Advisor Margaret Cutler of the College of Computing work together to advise all CM students.
