New Equipment Allows Easy Conferencing with Other Major Universities

On April 24, a new HD video conferencing system from LifeSize was unveiled to the public in TSRB. The School of Interactive Computing has received the equipment as a donation to facilitate HD conferencing with several other major US universities (CMU, MIT, Harvard, Washington and Stanford). The system will ultimately be put on a portable frame for use throughout TSRB. Training and use of the system will be based on level of interest. Sonic Generator Performs Final Concert of Season

In its final concert of the 2006-2007 season, Sonic Generator, Georgia Tech's new ensemble-in-residence, performed six works which explored the ways in which sound and media recording and reproduction technologies can be transformed, subverted, and incorporated into live concert performances. In its review of the concert, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution called Sonic Generator "the most stimulating addition to Atlanta's musical life this season." The ensemble is sponsored by the GVU Center and organized by the Music Department.

CoC Faculty the Only Regents' Professors Named for 2007

Richard Fujimoto and Nancy Nersessian have received the only two available Regents' promotions from the Institute for 2007. The promotions were confirmed last month by letters from Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough. Congratulations Richard and Nancy!

Peter Freeman and Richard LeBlanc Receive Emeritus Status

Peter Freeman, founding dean of the College of Computing, has been given the Dean Emeritus distinction, and retired Professor Richard Leblanc has been named Professor Emeritus. Richard currently teaches classes at the College of Computing. Emeritus status is an honorific title signifying distinguished service to Georgia Tech and is recommended by the president to the Board of Regents after retirement.

Mike Hunter Joins GTISC Research Faculty

Mike Hunter comes to GTISC from the University of California at Berkeley's Information Services and Technology organization where he worked as a network analyst and systems programmer. Mike joins GTISC as a research scientist and technical liaison for industry partnerships. He will be presenting on GTISC VoIP security research at the Department of Defense Intelligence Information Systems (DoDIIS) meeting in Chicago in early May.

Mustaque Ahamad To Speak at ORNL Cyber Security Workshop

GTISC Director Mustaque Ahamad will give a presentation on "Trusted Passages: Meeting Security Needs of Information Rich Distributed Applications" at the Cyber Security and Information Infrastructure Research (CSIIR) Workshop at Oakridge National Laboratory, May 14-15, 2007. The goal of the workshop is to "challenge, establish and debate a far-reaching discussion that broadly and comprehensively outlines a strategy for cyber security that is founded on sound technologies that meet the challenge of cyber security."

CoC Honors Exceptional Students, Faculty, and Staff

CoC hosted its 16th Annual Awards Celebration on April 17, 2007. Master of Ceremony and CoC Associate Dean and Honors & Awards Chair Merrick Furst led the College in congratulating students, faculty, and staff on another exciting and productive year. Leo Mark was the recipient of the Peter A. Freeman Faculty Award and the Dean's Award was presented to David Bader.

Image of Computing Task Force Director Visits CoC

Jill Ross, Director of the Image of Computing Task Force, met with several groups on campus about the goal of promoting a positive image of computing careers in order to attract more highly-qualified students to BS, MS and PhD studies in computing. CoC Professor and Stephen Fleming Chair in Telecommunications James Foley co-chairs the Image of Computing Task Force, a jointly-funded effort of Microsoft, Intel, HP, CRA, ACM, IEEE-CS, AAAI, SIAM and USENIX.

TSO Presents on Data Security

At the Staff Luncheon on April 24, TSO Help Desk Manager Doug Conley gave a short presentation on password and data security. Among other things, he advised staff to store data on the adminfs server if at all possible, as it is the only place backed up regularly. RoboCup 2007 Atlanta Wants You!

Volunteers are needed for RoboCup 2007 Atlanta, the world's premier robotics research competition. This year's event is hosted by Georgia Tech from June 30th to July 10th and will include approximately 218 senior robot teams and 140 junior teams from over 20 countries. Don't miss your chance to be a part of this exciting event.
