Next Meeting - 3:00PM - 4:15PM, (Friday) January 30, 1998

MPEG and MPEG-II

Presented by

Lenitra Clay

Digital video technology in the 1980s made it possible to use digital video compression for a variety of telecommunication applications: teleconferencing, digital broadcast codec and video telephony. MPEG is the hugely successful and widely accepted video compression standard that has allowed video technology to permeate both network and desktop computing. Lenitra will present highlights from the reading list document, MPEG: Avideo Compression Standard for Multimedia Applications (Le Gall), and will also discuss its eventual successor, MPEG-II.

See Joe Dixon if you need a copy of the MPEG document.

The presentation dates have not been set beyond January 23, 1998, but should be available by January 30, 1998. Several students have already requested opportunities to present:

  • January 23: Covert Channels in the TCP/IP Protocol Suite, Richard Clayton.
  • January 30: MPEG: A Video Compression Standard for Multimedia Applications (Le Gall) and MPEG-II, Lenitra Clay.
  • February 06: Mary Chamlee.
