CS6364 Hypermedia -- Other Resources

[CS6364 page] [calendar] [Reading] [Assignments] [Resources] [Webpointers]

On this page I will collect course resources that do not exactly fit into the categories 'reading materials' or 'web pointers'. You well notice however that there IS overlap which should inspire you to read Alexander's article: "A City is not a Tree" (on of the suggested reading papers that is in our reader).

Presentations / Slides

I finally found the time to convert our slides to postscript. If you cannot use them that way and nothing else helps I can make printouts.

Demos and Systems to play around with

This list is just a start and very well under construction. In many cases I don't know yet where the systems are really accessible. Please send me email about all interesting systems you find somewhere in GVU, on campus, on the Web,... and let me know how to access them. Then I can put that information on this page.

J.Nielsens HyperCard Stack - Hypertext'87 Trip report

We briefly talked about that stack on March 27 but I hope we will find the time to talk a litte more about it later. It's a very early system but it shows many features we would like to have in much more modern systems. It is the system on which the article: Nielsen, J. The Art of Navigation through Hypertext, Communications of the ACM, 33, 3, (1990), pp. 296-310 is based (required reading). You can download the hypercard stack from ftp://ftp.gatech.edu/pub/lcc/andreas/HypertextReport.sea.Hqx (262 KB).

You will need HyperCard or a HyperCard player (Macintosh) to use it.

VIBE Visualization system

We didn't talk about this system yet. It is the basis for these papers in the reading list:

VIBE runs on PCs under Windows 3.1. I promised not to put the system on a server but if somebody of you wants to play with it s/he can have a copy. VIBE creates a 'space' defined by several points of interest and arranges documents withing this space.

HyperG and the Harmony Browser

For his talks Keith Andrews will install a HyperG server and related software at GVU. This software will not be deleted after his talk but will be available to all of us to play around with.

Required reading: Andrews, K., Kappe, F., and Maurer, H. Serving Information to the Web with Hyper-G, Computer Networks and ISDN Systems (WWW3), Darmstadt, Germany, 1995, accessible at http://www.igd.fhg.de/www/www95/proceedings/papers/105/hgw3.html.

HyperSpace/Narcissus

The hyperspace visualisation system allows you to build maps of parts of the web, producing output that looks reminiscent of the ball and stick models that you find in chemistry departments.

You can see some screen shots, and find out more from the hyperspace home page.

You can also review the slides from Andy Wood's demonstration, or run the software yourself...

Required Reading: Hendley, R.J., et. al. Narcissus: Visualizing Information, InfoVis'95, IEEE Press, Atlanta, 1995, pp. 90-96, accessible at ftp://ftp.cs.bham.ac.uk/pub/authors/R.J.Hendley/ieeeviz.ps.Z.

Aravindan Veerasamy's Query Visualization system

We will talk about this system later in the course and hopefully also get a demo. If you want to see / try that system you probably have to contact Samy directly

Required Reading: Veerasamy, A., Hudson, S., and Navathe, S. Querying, navigating and Visualizing an Online Library Catalog, GVU Tech report, 1996, accessible at ftp://ftp.cc.gatech.edu/pub/people/veerasam/sir.ps.

Navigational View Builder

Sougata's system. I don't know (yet) if it is generally available on any GVU machine. I'll find out about that asap. You can also contact Sougata Mukherjea directly.

I just noticed that this paper was not declared required reading - probably my mistake. Please read it or one of the related papers in the reading list!

Mukherjea, S. and Foley, J.D. Visualizing the World-Wide Web with the Navigational View Builder, GVU report, GVU-TR 95-09, 1995, accessible at ftp://ftp.gvu.gatech.edu/pub/gvu/tech-reports/95-09.ps.Z.

Eric Ayers' Graphic History Browser

This system is available at GVU somewhere. I don't know where (yet).

Required Reading: Ayers, E.Z. and Stasko, J.T. Using Graphic History in Browsing the World Wide Web, WWW4, Boston, 1995, accessible at http://www.w3.org/pub/Conferences/WWW4/Papers2/270/.

GopherVR

I have an alpha version of GopherVR you can have a copy of. There should be a newer one somewhere on the Apple site but I couldn't find it now. The alpha is reasonable stable to play a little with it. It runs both on 680x0 macs and PowerMac but a PowerMac is strongly recommended...

More to come...
