CS 6751 Winter Quarter 1996

Final Exam

The following information is required for your final exam. Everything on this list must be turned in to Dr. Abowd in his office by the end of the exam period, 10:50am on Monday, March 11:

  1. Cyberguide Evaluation plan
  2. Cyberguide as Groupware
  3. Peer assessment
  4. Classroom 2000 Questionnaire
  5. Lecture-by-lecture journal
All work is to be completed by the individual. The final exam should be prepared as a hardcopy report to hand in.
  1. Cyberguide evaluation plan (50 points)

You have spent a good amount of time this quarter developing a prototype and evaluation plan for a project within the Classroom 2000 theme. I now want you to apply what you have learned about HCI and usability evaluation to a completely different project. The project you will be evaluating is the Cyberguide project, another flagship project of the Future Computing Environments group in the College of Computing. You should have seen a demonstration of Cyberguide at the GVU Demo Day that was held at the beginning of the quarter and which you were required to attend. If you missed out on that experience, there will be another chance to find out about Cyberguide at 12pm on Wednesday, March 6 in CoC Room 101. Further information on the project can be found on the Web by viewing the Cyberguide Project Notebook.

I want you to prepare a usability evaluation plan for Cyberguide. In this evaluation, I want you to provide a brief description of the project and to identify the main usability criteria by which you would judge its usability. Be sure you are focusing on usability criteria or principles here, and not functional design criteria. I want these usability criteria/principles to be specific enough to be evaluated by means of an evaluation plan.

You have a budget of 5 person-weeks (a total of 200 person-hours) to complete your evaluation plan. In defining your evaluation plan, I want you to budget for how much time each evaluation exercise is to take, based on your experience performing any of them this quarter. You can use any number of usability personnel as long as you stay under the personnel budget of 5 person-weeks. Assume they have as much usability expertise as you have now.

Your evaluation plan should make very clear why you have chosen each evaluation task (you can choose from any discussed in the book or in the lectures), justifying it with respect to the evaluation criteria. It should also be clear how you have assigned personnel to tasks so that I can easily determine if you are under or over budget. I recommend making a table/timeline to show me how your usability staff are assigned. Remember, this document is only a plan; you do not have to complete the actual evaluation. However, it must be clear what results you are looking for for each evaluation task in your plan.

  2. Cyberguide as Groupware (20 points)

In 500 words or less, please describe what kind of possibilities there are for using Cyberguide as a groupware application, either in its current form or in a modified form.

  3. Peer assessment (5 points)

At the midterm, you provided an assessment of the contributions of all members in your project. Now I would like you to prepare a final assessment of your project teammates. You are to assess each individual in your team (including yourself) based on the attributes indicated in the rows of the table below. Assess each individual on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the lowest/worst assessment and 10 being the highest/best assessment).

    Attribute Teammate 1 Teammate 2 Teammate 3 Teammate 4
    Did fair share of work

    Reliability/Responsibility for own work

    Communication within and outside team

  4. Classroom 2000 questionnaire/daily notebook journal (20 points)

A separate questionnaire was handed out in class on Tuesday, March 5. Please complete this questionnaire and return it with your exam. I would ask that you pay special attention to the questions at the end and answer them as completely as you can.

  5. Lecture-by-lecture journal (5 points)

You are to turn in a copy of your handwritten notes together with the daily log questionnaire that you have been keeping all quarter. If you need access to the College of Computing photocopier, you can ask the instructor for an account number to use for your photocopying.
