College of Computing
Grad Newsletter Fall/Winter 1995/6

Introduction:

The College of Computing Grad Newletter hilights recent activities of its graduate student population. Starting with the Winter 1994 edition, the newsletter is available primarily as a multimedia document. Comments, suggestions, as well as entries for the Winter 1995 Grad Newsletter can be sent to grad-news@cc.gatech.edu.

Recent Accomplishments:

Lara Catledge and Colin Potts recently had a paper accepted at the International Conference on Requirements Engineering. The conference will be in Colorado Springs in April, 1996.

National Library of Medicine in October.

Andy also published a paper Andreas Kogelnik (Emory-GMM & CoC), Marie Lott (Emory-GMM), Michael Brown (Emory-GMM), Shamkant Navathe (CoC), and Douglas Wallace (Emory-GMM), "MITOMAP: a human mitochondrial genome database". Nucleic Acids Research 24(1):177-9, Jan 1 1996.

And co-authored a presentation for a special meeting of the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) at the American Society of Human Genetics Meeting in Minneapolis this past October. Wallace, Kogelnik, Lott, Brown and Navathe.

Annie I. Antón's paper, ``Goal-Based Requirements Analysis,'' has been accepted to the Second IEEE International Conference on Requirements Engineering ( ICRE `96) . The conference will take place in Colorado Springs this April.

Annie participated in the booth sessions at the IFIP WG 2.9 Software Requirements Engineering Inaugural Meeting in Hampshire UK (22-25 March 1995) and attended the Second IEEE International Symposium on Requirements Engineering (RE`95) at the University of York (27-29 March 1995).

She is currently serving on the Georgia Tech Presidents' Council Governing Board and is the ODK Student Liaison to the Faculty.

Graduate Students Annie I. Antón's, Tucker Balch, Miroslav Klivansky and Phyllis Schneck attended the 14th Annual Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Conference on January the 26th.

Alfred Watkins presented a paper entitled "Support for Scalable Video Using Parallelism With Merging" at the IS&T/SPIE Symposium on Electronic Imaging: Science & Technology, Storage and Retrieval for Still Image and Video Databases Conference 1996 on Friday, February 2nd. Keith Edwards got doctorized at the end of fall quarter and is now living in San Francisco and working at Xerox PARC. There he is working with the Bayou Project, doing research in weakly-consistent distributed data sharing, with an emphasis on mobile computation. Keith is specifically looking at issues related to collaboration and awareness in the presence of wireless networks and PDAs. He is also investigating the upper bounds on number of buzzwords in one paragraph.

Jeff Byron's paper entitled " PARSYNTH: A Case Study on Implementing a Real-Time Digital Audio Synthesizer " authored by Byron A. Jeff and Karsten Schwan has been accepted as a short paper in the 4th Int'l Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Real-Time Systems (WPDRTS) to be held April 15-16, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Summer Interns:

Q. Alex Zhao went to Sun Microsystems, Inc., SunSoft

Designed, prototyped, and implemented a graphical monitoring application for the Solaris Distributed Object Environment (now called Solaris NEO). An ORB client object encapsulates the monitoring system consisting of a Motif front end which interacts with the user, a back end which communicates with other objects distributed on the network, and an animation engine which continuously updates work-group and host statistics in real-time using the RenderWare(TM) 3D graphics library.

Yusuf Goolamabbas spent the summer at Schlumberger Austin Systems Center developing a graphical well log data editor.

Web Recognition:

The Georgia Tech Cognitive Science site was awarded "Three Stars" out of four by the Internet indexing service Magellan. The star ratings are used by Magellan to winnow out less promising sites; any search for "three or more stars" will include us.

The site was designed by Anthony Francis with the assistance and contributions of Ashwin Ram, Mark Devaney, Mike Cox, Mimi Recker, Mike Byrne and a whole host of other web hackers in the Cognitive Science program. Thanks!
