How do I get proof of my participation in the
chat sessions?
Once in the chat room for the first time, you must go into Edit, then
Settings, and click on the tab "Classroom Settings." Make sure the box
next to "Create a Log of each session" is checked. You then also should
go under File, and under Logging click on "Begin logging." You can
choose where you want the file to be saved, and that is where you will
be able to access the session file for proof of participation.
What is this research about?
IRC Français was developed to study the difference between
interactions of students and teachers in the classroom versus these
interactions in an online chat environment. For more detailed
information about our research, check out our papers at www.cc.gatech.edu/~jhudson/publications.html.
What do I need to do to be a research
participant?
You will need to fill out an online questionnaire at www.cc.gatech.edu/elc/irc-francais/survey.html.
You will also fill out the online permission form. Once you’ve done
this, we will automatically be sent the log files after each session
online, so you don’t have to do anything more.
How do I get a password and username for IRC
Français?
You will choose a username and password when you fill out the survey
before downloading the software.
How do I find other students to chat
with?
There are several ways to do this. If you want to host a session,
you can email us at
irc-francais-request@cc.gatech.edu and tell us what time you’d be interested in hosting a
session and what your topic will be and we’ll announce it. Sessions
for the following week must be submitted by Friday of the week before so
that we have enough time to email everyone. You can email the Discuss
mailing lists if you simply want to find others to chat with, and you
can all work out a time to chat on your own. Finally, you can check the
online calendar to find out when hosted sessions will occur at
www.cc.gatech.edu/elc/irc-francais/events/index.html.
Can I chat at any time, or only at scheduled
times?
You can chat any time! Email us at irc-francais-request@cc.gatech.edu and let us know when you’d like to chat. We’ll announce
it for you.
Can I host a chat?
Yes! Once again, just email us at irc-francais-request@cc.gatech.edu and we’ll announce it for you. Make sure you include the
topic that you would like to discuss in your email. You’ll have to
talk to your professor and make sure that he or she is willing to give
you credit for a student-hosted session, but this shouldn’t be a
problem.
Can I pick the chat topic for a hosted
chat?
Yes! Email us and tell us which topic you’d like to discuss and
we’ll suggest it to the hosts for use as an official topic.
I'm not in a French class. Can I still
participate?
Of course you can! You may participate in hosted sessions even if
you’re not a student. The more participation the better!
How can I report a bug?
Email us at bug-irc-francais@cc.gatech.edu.
