Photography

Personal. I am a documentary and fine-art photographer, with several one-person gallery exhibits at the Atlanta Photography Center, Backdrop Gallery (Atlanta), and Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. The picture on my home page, Portrait of the Artist with Teapots, exemplifies the wry, flaneur sensibility that permeates my straight work.

I also worked for several years in a more pictorialist style using plastic Diana cameras.

Recently, I have been dragged into the age of digital manipulation, but not the age of compositing multiple images (really).

Sorry, but I don't flickr.

Research ideas. Right now, I have little to no interest in image manipulation algorithms or data structures. (It's not a deliberate Luddite thing, but I have always tried to keep photography and computing separate, perhaps so that I don't become a technology hobbyist.) But I am very interested in how the easy availability of new technology changes the ethical and aesthetic landscapes for practicing artists and journalists and the values of their consumers. Within CS 4001 there is a course segment and frequently given guest lecture on this topic. I can't post the slides, which contain the work of other photographers, for copyright reasons. (For more information on CS 4001, see the professional awareness page.)
