Joy Mountford

Brief Biography

Research Interests

S. Joy Mountford began her career in HCI at Honeywell where she designed user interfaces for military avionics systems. She then moved onto MCC, America's 5th generation computer consortium. Her past research focussed on using speech recognition and generation, stereographic displays, six degrees of freedom hand controllers, and intelligent systems in crew station design. Her most influencial work, however, was to come when she joined Apple Computer and later, Interval Research Corporation.

At Apple Computer, she managed the Human Interface Group and worked towards extending the user interface beyond the desktop application. Her research turned to audio and speech interfaces, 3D design tasks, hand-held players, and multi-media systems. The Human Interface Group was involved with the evolution of QuickTime, Navigable Scenes, Bubble Help, AppleSearch, Macintosh Finder, uses of color and information filters, and other portable devices. Joy Mountford was the founder of Apple's International Interface Design Project and continues to oversee it. This project involved setting up interdisciplinary courses at universities around the world.

Recently, Joy Mountford has turned towards the design of multi-media interfaces. She joined Interval Research Corporation four years ago to manage a musical development project. She has been an advocate of interface design for applications such as choreography, music, and performance art. Such applications include SoundScapes that can be shared across the Internet. She has focused on enabling technology for the artist. Her research has delved into how artists use, or might use, technology to do their work in music, theatre, arts, and movie-making.

Joy Mountford has been a panelist and speaker at numerous human-computer interaction conferencesm including the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems for the last nine years. She conceived of and technically supported The Art of Human-Computer Interface Design, a major instructional interface text. She is the author of numerous conference and journal artices, some of which are listed below.
