Biography |
Karsten Schwan is a Regents’ Professor in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of
Technology. He is a Director of the Center for Experimental Research in
Computer Systems (CERCS), with co-directors from both GT's College
of Computing and School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His
M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are from Carnegie-Mellon University, where he
conducted research in high performance and parallel computing,
including operating and programming systems support for the Cm*
multiprocessor, followed by subsequent deep dives into real-time and
distributed systems. His current work concerns operating systems for
multicore platforms, virtualization technologies, and HPC and
enterprise middleware. Specific recent research and publications are
highlighted on the project web pages of the 'KORVO' group. They
include system technologies for machines with heterogeneous processor
and memory structures, efficient methods for managing applications and
services in datacenter and cloud computing systems, middleware for I/O
and online data analytics for high end applications and machines, and
new cloud technologies for end systems and devices.
Prof. Schwan has been contributing professionally on the steering committees of the ACM Middleware, ICAC, and HPDC conferences. He recently chaired the ACM Middleware (2013) conference and has participated on the program committees of conferences that include ASPLOS, FAST, ACM Frontiers, Eurosys, HPDC, ICAC, IEEE ICDCS, IEEE IPDPS, ACM Middleware, ACM SOCC, ACM/IEEE Supercomputing, Usenix Annual Technical Conference, and others.
His current affiliations and collaborations are with the Intel Science and Technology Center on Cloud Computing (ISTC-CC), with Oak Ridge National Labs, with Sandia Labs (Albuquerque) and other DOE facilities, and with companies that include CISCO, HP, Intel, VMware, and others.
His current teaching obligations include CS 7210 - Distributed Systems, CS 6210 - Advanced Operating Systems, CS 3210 - Operating Systems.
We thank the companies contributing to our research, including CISCO, HP, ICE, Intel, LexisNexis, VMware, with past contributions from Amazon, Delta Air Lines, IBM, Logicblox, Yahoo, and others.
