Travel Advice
METRO: use it; the only place it doesn't
go is Georgetown, and, if you have a transfer; you can get half price on
the Georgetown shuttle; get a Smarttrip card to breaze through the gates;
feed it $20 or more and get a 10% discount; card can be purchased in the
METRO store at the back of the Ballston Mall.
Reagan National Airport:
ultraconvenient; on the Yellow or Blue lines; reduced traffic means short
lines; somewhat more expensive.
Dulles Airport: can
be reached by the Orange line plus a bus.
Baltimore-Washington Airport
(BWI): twenty miles north; Super Shuttle will bring you to your door; MARC
train to Union Station and the Metro, but not on weekends or holidays.
Garage: get the car off of the street; you won't need it anyhow.
Orientation: the Capitol
is the center; districts northeast, southeast, southwest and northwest
are defined by Capitol Streets North, South and East, and the National
Mall Westward; numbered streets increase north and south away from the
Mall; lettered streets advance away from the Capitol; avenues named after
states are diagonals; many one way streets.
