Other Places to Visit in Washington

  • The National Zoo: take the Red line to Cleveland Park and walk downhill to the Zoo; coming back, continue downhill on Connecticut and take the Metro from Woodley Park.
  • The United States Botanical Garden: just west of the Capitol along Independence; small but well done.
  • Arlington Cemetery and the The United States Marine Corps War Memorial: Arlington House, Kennedy grave site; Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
  • Cruise on the Potomac: I took my parents on the Odyssey evening dinner cruise; about $100/ticket; descent food; band; great views.
  • Dumbarton Oaks: Gardens; north Georgetown; nice park just north of the gardens.
  • National Geographic Society Explorers Hall: North of the White House; walk around the outside of the building to see all of the photographs.
  • The Old Post Office: East of the White House; nice view of Washington.
  • The Alexandria Waterfront: nice short walk near Union and King in Alexandria.
  • Torpedo Factory Art Center: artist lofts and gallery on the waterfront in Alexandria.
  • Eastern Market: farmer's market southeast of the Capitol.
  • The Library of Congress: just east of the Capitol; nice tour.
  • Union Station: north of the Capitol; impressive interior and interesting shops.
  • The Jefferson Memorial: my personal favorite; due south of the Washington Monument.
  • The White House: due north of the Washington Monument.
  • The Lincoln Memorial: due west of the Washington Monument.
  • Washington Monument: tallest structure in Washington and centerpiece to the cities architectural vision.
  • The Supreme Court Building: just east of the Capitol; get there much earlier than the guidebooks say in order to have a chance to get in.
  • Cineplex Odeon Cinemas: art house; Bethesda.
  • Georgetown
  • The Old Stone House: M Street Georgetown.
  • Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Visitor Center: Georgetown.
  • Georgetown Park: shops and restaurants on the Potomac.
  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial: understated elegance; Potomac Park West between the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial.
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial: overpowering; near the Lincoln Memorial; north of the reflecting pond.
  • Korean War Veterans Memorial: near the Lincoln Memorial, south of the reflecting pond.
  • National Cathedral: northern Georgetown.
  • Friendship Archway: Chinatown.
  • Japanese Interment Memorial: on Louisiana between Constitution and Union Station.
