ACM Programming ContestsOver the past few years, I have organized and coached several Georgia Tech programming teams for the highly-competitive regional & international ACM inter-collegiate programming contests. Overall, during my years as the coach:
BackgroundSee the official ACM contest website for information on its worldwide inter-collegiate programming contests. I came to Georgia Tech in 1993 and found little enthusiasm in the students at Georgia Tech for the ACM contests. So, I started tapping into the "advanced" students in CS 1500/01 (those large strength courses), snagged a decent number of them and coached a few teams to give UCF a run for their money in the southeast. I might say, ever since then, every year, all the traditional top teams in the southeast had to start taking careful notice of Georgia Tech :-). I coached the Georgia Tech programming teams mostly from 1993 to 2000. Ken Calvert, who was a professor here, also coached a couple of times in between Prior to coaching Georgia Tech teams, I might add, I was a team member myself at UCF, placing 8th in 1991, and 2nd in 1992 Southeast regionals. Current StatusAs I had to move on to full-time research after finishing my Ph.D., I couldn't afford much time for the contests. David Van Brackle was my coach at UCF, and since he moved to Atlanta, I found it fit to let Georgia Tech from benefit from his coaching brilliance, and so invited him to coach at Georgia Tech starting with 2001. ResultsBelow is a compilation of results of Georgia Tech teams from past contests while I was the coach.
