Problem
In 1991, Mark Weiser wrote a seminal paper introducing the research area of ubiquitous computing. Weiser followed up this paper with a report in Communications of the ACM in 1993 detailing some CS research issues that ubiquitous computing pushed. Part of the interest and challenge of ubiquitous computing is that it represents challenges for a large set of CS subdisciplines. The purpose of this project is to explore the brief history of ubiquitous computing stemming from the initial efforts of Weiser's Xerox PARC research group and to uncover what research challenges remain. Interested students should contact Gregory and discuss what would be an appropriate list of readings and objectives.

Students should expect to do a literature search and read a good sample of research papers (at least 10) and create a summary report and annotated bibliography. A good starting place for some readings and themes is the HCI Area Body of Knowledge on Ubiquitous Computing Attendance at one of Gregory's weekly lab meetings is highly recommended.
