things to do for Classroom 2000

Here is a summary of today's meeting:

1) IBM will give us an answer on the ThinkPads early next week. Motorola
is basically still ignoring us. Don Norman said he would donate some Newtons
but nothing in the way of a delivery date at this point.

2) Sue is going to lead another group doing the Newton version of the C 2000
student notebook. Nick and Yusuf are going to concentrate on the ThinkPad for
now until...

3) Audio. I want to do a live demonstration of the audio service starting with
my Thursday class next week. So, we are going to meet next week on Wednesday
from 2-3pm in Room 239 of the Rich Building (Scott, would you check to see
that we have the room and if not, we will go over to 242). We will be doing a
dress
rehearsal of the sound recording set-up. From now until Wednesday, Yusuf, Ami
and Nick will be working on getting the audio service working, all the way from
recording the sound to creating the html page from the Thinkpad to clicking on
the html to launch the audio server.

4) We have two microphone needs. One for Thursday's class and one for
the longterm. Scott is going to look into getting us something for Wednesday/
Thursday. If you can't find something, Scott, let us know on Monday and we'll
have to find a mike somewhere. Ultimately, we need a microphone solution that
allows Gregory to be able to freely wander around the room and be recorded.
This could be achieved by a travelling mike attached to Gregory that is either
wireless or with a long wire. Or we could use a stationary mike that had good
range. Scott, Chris and Nick are looking into longterm microphone solutions.

5) We are probably going to want to dock the ThinkPads in 239 for the duration
of the quarter. Because there is a serious issue concerning the downloading
and uploading of notes to and from the ThinkPad, we thought we would go with a
newtorked server solution. Scott is looking into getting us a rack and
network
set-up in 239 so that we can automate this procedure. Yusuf and Nick are
going to work on automating the pre and post-production steps from Gregory's
lecture materials to the ThinkPad to the Web. You can assume that Gregory
will deliver each lecture as a set of GIF images that will sit on some
FTP'able site.

4) Gregory desperately needs Amy Ayers help in figuring out how to set up the
student Web syllabus pages that will contain all of the public (my prepared
material/handouts/homework assignments) and private (student's own notes for
each class) information. A suggestion for the syllabus is found on:

http://www.cc.gatech.edu/computing/classes/cs2390_95_fall/

Scott suggested that when a student goes to look at the syllabus for the
class, they fill out a form that provides enough information so that the table
of lecture by lecture information can be constructed on the fly. That sounds
simple enough, but I'm going to need Amy's help to realize this vision. I
heard
that Amy's hands are doing better so I would welcome the opportunity to make
use
of her enormous Web skills.

That's all. Have a good Thanksgiving. I should be contactable by e-mail all
days except Thursday.

Gregory

P.S. Savita Chandran is going to be the TA for this course, so we need to
get her up to speed on some things.
