Delayed - April 17, 2009
Those who didn't see this coming, shame on you! The project is currently on hold for reasons I'm sure everyone is aware of. The silver lining to this massive, massive cloud is that I'll have 1 month between classes end and I start on an internship. That means I'll essentially have THIRTY days to finish this up. You can bet there will be progress made here.
Slow Progress - Mar 24, 2009
As always, midway through a semester everything picks up and hobbies take a backseat to career advancement. I'll promise that the game will be out before Duke Nukem Forever, but not anything else. The next couple of weeks are looking very busy as well, so progress has slowed to a grind (but not a halt). Basically I have everything done for the new area except the actual event transitions. I might go back and rewrite some of the dialogue because I'm not too impressed with it. I also added a hit counter to see how google indexing affects the visitor rate.
Dialogue - Feb 21, 2009
Worked on the dialogue for the characters. I find that working with notebook++ was a lot better than anything else I've used for this purpose. Line numbers and similar column width made it easier to calculate the 51-52 character length of the RM2k3 message box. Apart from that, I'm in the process of reworking the algorithm for traveling through the new area. The reason was that I wanted the new area to be slightly more interactive than the Oregon Trail (which it's modeled after), so some revision was necessary.
Characters - Feb 10, 2009
The characters section is finished. Find it on the "about" tab at the top. In other news, the first round of interviews will be coming very soon, which means less time to work on RC. But fear not, once I start something, I see it through (even if it takes 5 years).
Maps - Feb 09, 2009
Almost finished with mapping of the new area over the weekend. Since the chronicle will take place entirely in a wasteland/desert it was pretty simple due to only using one tileset. At the same time, I can't just map a flat piece of land, call it a desert and retire. Due to perspective constraints with working in 2D, I created some cliffs to add some life to the wastelands. In total, I think I have 24 maps done for the area, which was pretty much all done over the weekend. My goal at this point would get it to be around 28 maps including the entrance/exit. I'm pretty excited for the project, because I'm not usually a fan of mapping and now that it's out of the way, I can move on to more interesting parts like algorithms of the game or balance. I'll eventually put up some screenshots of the area when I deem it is worthy.
Also, I realize that the banner is from the Hobbit, which I will change eventually when I have enough time.
Progress - Feb 07, 2009
Currently working on a new chronicle. After discussing the project with a few guys, I've decided it's probably a better idea for me to finish a new chronicles instead of releasing the rehashed version. That means the next release will be delayed, but the good news is that you'll have a new section to play through. This new chronicles will also be very different from previous ones, and will allude to a simple game you may have played in your youth (at least I have).
We're On! - Jan 19, 2009
A lot of things are uploaded today, but I will still be adding new material now and then. This also marks the birth of the webpage, so we'll see how it goes from here.
Downloads
Once I finish the game that is. There will be many mirrors and a version of game with down-sampled music
to cut down on the size.
One word of note. The game will not include the fonts package distributed by the Rm2k3 installer, I will provide a separate
download link with install instructions.
The game is compiled for running on XP systems only. I have not tested with any other platforms but it could be the case that Vista and Windows 7 supports backward dependencies. If you only have a Mac or for some reason only running Linux/Unix, then get a virtual machine (VMWare, ZEN) and get Rose Chronicles on there, although most Linux users probably prefer WINE or something.
