Faculty Recruiting

Proposals for Increasing Faculty recruiting input from grad students

Currently the faculty member hosting the candidate selects one student and asks him/her to organize lunch and collect feedback questionnaire.
Problems:

• Lunch attendance is scant, students wonder "does it makes a difference?"
• The faculty recruting student rep needs experience to involve students.
• The student organizing the lunch must spend his/her own money and reimbursement is slow.

Ways to increase feedback

• There could be direct discussions with advisor. Student rep should be proactive in the recruiting meeting, request to attend and / present case either in the meeting.
• Alternatively, a faculty member could meet with lunch participants after the lunch and collect feedback personally.

Organizing student should not to have to pay for lunch.

Santosh, Beki are sympathetic to more student involvement.

Revamp Graduate program curriculum presence

Tucker is the contact here. Need to find someone this summer: Julie is interested and will get involved.
Need a CSS student rep as well?

TA requirement: will old students be grandfathered? Seems they will not.
Slots are dead. Some students are admitted to specific funds. You have to commit to working for that funding source (professor) for 1 year.
Students will RA instead of TA the first year. Specifically International students may be concerned of switching.
It becomes hard to switch. The advisor may not be inclined to give up students after they train them.

More TSO changes

Davido Roberts reports on TSO advisory committee meeting. Working on communications to reach out to people.
The TSO should publish a statement of responsibilities so that it is clear what they will provide.
Making quality of life for TSO workers better.
Willing students may be able to work for TSO for funding on a semester by semester basis.
TSO will maintain the swikis.

Picnic

Julie and Shwetak are interested in organizing picnic in the fall.

MS program

Beki Wilson is leaving temporarily -- what's happening with the MS program management? Barbara Binder will take on her responsibilities.
