Virtual Orchestra Project

Developers: Maribeth Gandy, James Oliverio

Jeffrey and Maribeth will be working with IMTC to construct a compelling spatial audio demonstration by creating a 3D graphical virtual orchestra in which a viewer can freely move through a performance hall to hear a performance from different auditory perspectives.

Speech Compression Technology Evaluation

Researcher: Jeff Chastine

Jeff is presently evaluating and documenting the quality and compression ratios of major speech CODECS. Jeff will present his results in a web page with audio samples listing the attributes and quality of each CODEC. This data will be useful for other GVU educational projects involving the distribution of classroom lecture audio.

AudioLab VRML 3D Sound Tour

Developers: Jeff Wilson, Maribeth Gandy

To seek funding for development of the lab's physical infrastructure, Jeff, Jeffrey, and Maribeth are building a VRML tour of the fully constructed AudioLab. The audio component of this model will incorporate spatial attributes doubling its functionality as both a promotional piece and a technology demonstration.

Experimental Evaluation of the Effect of Audio Quality on Memory Retention and Presence

Researchers: Jarrell Pair, Kevin Scott, Prof. James Oliverio, Prof. Beth Davis, Prof. Larry Hodges

We plan to complete the experimental design and planning before June. This summer, we will run subjects and compile results.

Webpage Update

Developer: Charlie Hubbard

Before April 1st, Charlie will complete a revision of our webpage. Over the spring we will begin building a computing audio meta-resource archive on our page. This archive will incorporate information on 3D audio, music synthesis, audio perception, audio in HCI and other relevant topics. We will promote this resource throughout the digital audio community to bring attention to GVU AudioLab.

Csound Application Development

Researchers: Jeff Chastine, Charlie Hubbard, James Oliverio

Jeff and Charlie will continue to work with IMTC to develop Csound prototype applications.

Audio Encoding

Researchers: Jeff Chastine, Tom Hartley

Working with Tom, Jeff will document and investigate the feasibility and uniqueness of his audio encoding concept.

COOLVR Audio Rendering Engine

Developer: Jarrell Pair

Jarrell will aim to complete coding of the 3D audio rendering engine for the GVU virtual environment's group COOLVR virtual world building toolkit.

Audio Tutorial

Developer: Jarrell Pair, James Oliverio

Jarrell will complete a tutorial on sound design for virtual environments. This tutorial will be presented during Dr. Hodges' VR design special topics class. We hope to further develop this tutorial as an article for the journal PRESENCE and a potential book.

Outside Collaboration

Organizer: Jarrell Pair

Jarrell will continue our efforts to develop working relationships with other audio research labs in academia and industry.
