As one of the most innovative and prolific research laboratories in the
U.S., Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) offers its interns a truly
exceptional research and work experience.
PARC-the birthplace of laser printing, Ethernet, the graphical user
interface (GUI), and ubiquitous computing-has a unique multidisciplinary
culture spanning disciplines within physical, computational, and social
sciences.
Graduate interns are fully integrated into PARC's research activities
and have the opportunity to receive author credits on publications.
Undergraduate interns get to choose which projects they want to work on.
MBA interns work directly with research teams and technology
commercialization managers to move technologies through all stages of
the technology pipeline. Interns are also visibly involved in the
broader PARC community through poster sessions, forums, presentations,
lab meetings, and so on.
Past interns have overwhelmingly responded that their PARC experiences
were some of "the best experiences of my life, personally as well as
professionally." Click below to apply and be a part of this amazing
experience.

The User-Centered Solutions Lab (UCSL) is part of the Center for Applications, Content and
Services Research within Motorola Labs. Our charter is to utilize user-centered iterative
prototyping to drive Motorola businesses to realize growth opportunities in application,
content and services. We're a dynamic cross-functional team of engineers and Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI) specialists with a clear focus on advanced development and user-driven
innovation: designing complete solutions to real user problems, building prototypes that
users can interact with and evaluating prototypes with users.
Summer 2004 Internship Opportunities
For 2004, potential intern positions will afford the opportunity to contribute to one or
more of the following focus areas:
Enhanced Communication – creating new and enriching user
experiences through the combination of digital content — pictures, video, music — with
conversation.
Personal Content Management – enabling people to quickly
and easily find and use their personal digital content — pictures, movies, music —
on personal devices.
Ideal intern candidates will possess skills in both HCI and
technical (e.g. software) areas. Interns will participate as members of a project
team, addressing design hypotheses through a combination of HCI design, prototyping
and user evaluation. Specific intern projects will be chosen to match the skills
of the intern to more specific opportunities in our focus areas.

The Intel Research Network of labs offers internships to graduate students
who are working toward a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
(In limited cases, undergraduates and students pursuing a Masters degree may be accepted as well.)
Each of the four labs in Berkeley, Seattle, Pittsburgh, and Cambridge, England —
accepts up to eight students per year as interns. Internships typically last 3-4 months, although some
internships may extend beyond four months. A limited number of half-time school year internships are also
available. After submitting their resumes online, potential interns are interviewed by the staff and
director of the research lab of their choice before a final hiring decision is made.
Each lab has a focus:
Intel Research Berkeley - Extremely networked system - the very large,
the very small and the very numerous.
Intel Research Cambridge - New communications and network technologies
for application developers.
Intel Research Pittsburgh - Information storage and retrieval in the
ubiquitous computing environments of the future.
Intel Research Seattle - New technologies and usage models for
ubiquitous computing environments.

We are pleased to announce our Internship program in Microsoft Research again this year.
Microsoft relies on its research division to lead the way in identifying and developing the
technologies of the new century. Imagine having the resources to impact tomorrow's reality today - and having fun
while you do it. People here love their work because they get to think big and dream big. At Microsoft you get to
collaborate with the best and the brightest. You work with people from all types of backgrounds who excel in a
multitude of fields. Why are they here? To create something that matters. Not just to themselves, but to millions of
people around the world. And in the process, they can realize their own potential. It's a fun and challenging
environment - one powered by innovative people a lot like you. You'll have the opportunity to make a real difference at
Microsoft. You'll stretch your
skills in new directions and take your talents to new heights. Maybe that's why our intern program is one of the most
successful (and popular) in the industry.
We are searching for outstanding research scientists with the vision, knowledge, passion, and
commitment to be part of our team. What better way to get an up close and personal look at this future than by
spending the summer working on very challenging projects with some very bright researchers? Our past interns have
greatly impacted research in key technical areas, published papers based on their summer work at MSR, established
strong ties with our industrial research staff as well as other interns, been challenged to look at super tough
problems in new ways, and all the while, having fun doing it.
Here are some comments from our past interns:
"Microsoft takes care of its interns very well. The internship was a very pleasant experience
and being in Microsoft Research, I was able to meet prominent people from different fields of computer science
research. The work that is being done is really cutting edge and being able to be a part of it was exciting to say the
least."
"My experience as an intern was quite positive; however, I think it's far more likely that in
a year or two I will be a faculty member interested in working with my group than that I will actually return to
become a member of my group. Knowing this group with a strong commitment to university relationships and R&D related
to university instruction will be a huge asset as a faculty member."
"My mentor, manager and others at MSR are the very best computer scientists on earth today,
and getting an opportunity to work and closely interact with them was a great experience. I learned a lot and
gained confidence in the direction my doctoral research is taking."
Students are encouraged to apply. If you'd like to learn more about the research groups,

To apply, please send your resume as a Word document or in ASCII text and recommendation letters to
mrintern@microsoft.com.
We look forward to hearing from you.
